Book addresses both "how to" and infertility issues,
By Donna C (Dallas, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant (Paperback)
After reading the other reviews, I can see how some reviewers didn't feel this book was for them. It does focus a lot on infertility treatment. I bought the book because my doctor suspected that I might have difficulties either getting pregnant or staying pregnant. But, I also couldn't remember all the advice my doc gave me on what days were my most fertile. I found this book and it covered everything I wanted to know, including: why I might have trouble conceiving/staying pregnant; what types of treatment are available; how to tell when you are ovulating; and the proper timing to ensure optimum chances of conception. I got pregant (naturally) the month after I bought this book and I know exactly when I conceived. I personally enjoyed reading about the infertility challenges and treatments. But I can understand how some people who don't have those concerns would prefer to have a book focused strictly on "how to" make a baby without using medical intervention. So, I'd recommend this book for those who are trying to conceive the old-fashioned way, but who may have infertility issues and want to understand those issues and how they can be treated.

Vague and general,
By boxfordshire (Medford, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant (Paperback)
We were looking for scientific, comprehensive information about fertility and conception. We found this book to be vague and general, which is OK if you need some background on general infertility or fertility issues. If you want a much more specific "how-to" on identifying fertile days, knowledge of fertility signs, and how to make detailed charts that will be useful for you and your doctor, then we very strongly recommend Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" instead.

Excellent & comprehensive resource--Natural therapies ...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant (Paperback)
Superb book on the problems leading to infertility and what can be done to resolve these. The section on Male Infertility was enlightening--and a must-read for all couples struggling to have a baby. So often we look at the woman when conception does not occur--and half the time it's a "male" problem. Get it checked out--because there is treatment, according to these authors. I was most impressed with the natural therapies sections in the book--and the part on reducing stress was most helpful for me and my wife.

I was under the impression that this was a book for all couples wanting information on conceiving. It is actually more focused on infertility and oververcoming/dealing with infertility. There are some helpful chapters on BBT charting and drug-free ways to improve your conception chances (which is more what I was looking for), but as I mentioned beofre the primary focus is on infertile couples.

Super focus on Natural ways to get pregnant & have a baby.,
By SARAH ANNE GOINGS (Baton Rouge) - See all my reviews

Excellent book and I highly recommend to couples who are wanting to start a family. While we were not diagnosed as infertile, the book had great tips on how to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy, and my husband and I learned a great deal. It's easy to read and understand, and the section on alternative methods to reduce stress was superb, and the diet section was excellent.

Out of all the infertility books, this is the only one that gave us hope that we would have a child and helped us to understand why women over 35 have difficulty conceiving. Luckily, we now have a precious daughter (age 5 months)--but three years ago, it seemed like we'd never have a family. All the emotions we felt are described in this book and the stress reduction exercises helped both of us when we had to wait for test results. It's so easy to blame the other spouse, but we learned to deal with those feelings so we didn't add to our marriage stress. The book is written in a friendly style and makes you feel like you're NOT ALONE! Anyway--it helped us so much. We recommend to all our friends who are now starting to plan a family.

No, not everybody knows how!,
By Kai Sann (Vienna, Austria) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant (Paperback)
When I showed this book to friends and family the general comment was "I thoght you knew how to do that!". Well, sure I did, but this book helped clear up a lot of misunderstandings and clarified many fine points that are not general knowledge. I read the book as soon as we started trying for a baby and everybody said it was too early and it would just get me all worried. In fact the book is a great source of specific information, and it is a good start on the topic since everything is explained easily and starting with the more basic terms and abbreviations to the more complex aspects of which hormone does what when. The glossary is a very handy addition where I could look up terms even long after the first read. It deals evenly with all aspects of fertiliy and provides very person who is new in this game with a helpful guideline. It actually gave me a more relaxed outlook on the question of whether I was fertile or not because it gave me an excellent overview of all the things that can be done today to help fertility along. So, even if the "year" is not over go ahead and read it, it will give you more peace of mind then sitting around wondering what all could go wrong. It is better to know your enemy and take the scare out of not knowing. Enjoy the book, I sure did (and still am every time I read up on yet another chapter that has become relevant). AND since it does not assume you know it all, it is a perfect guide for men trying to understand what is happening to them and their partners.

excellent advice,

I wish I'd known about this book in the almost two years it took me to get pregnant. After reading the sections on stress I fully believe stress is what was responsible for our infertility--the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with us other than my husband's count was somewhat low/abnormal. We are young--me, late 20s, him early 30s, both stress cases to begin with, classic overachievers, and infertility only made us more type A. it was even worse for my husband since he had given up a son for adoption and had always regretted it. We began to our lives by the calendar--after awhile it seemed like the only reason we were together was to have a baby. Little did we know that stress was probably what was screwing up my ovulation cycle and his count the whole time. Finally we decided to give it six more months and at the end of it we would try whatever drugs or interventions the doctors wanted to put us on. I resolved to do everything possible to try to get pregnant. We started using ovulation kits; I got massages twice a month; he stopped riding his bike and we both went on high doses of vitamins. Then at the end of the six months we took a vacation--two weeks in Italy, nothing but drinking wine and absorbing beauty. Neither of us thought of work the entire time. I got pregnant the day after we returned home. I truly believe that if I'd read this book earlier we could have saved ourselves a lot of time and heartache. The role of stress in infertility is deeply underestimated; this book not only acknowledges what stress can do but the many ways to combat it. Highly recommended for those in my situation.

Great read on PCOS and miscarriage,
By A Customer
This review is from: Making a Baby: Everything You Need to Know to Get Pregnant (Paperback)
This book is extremely credible and gave me all I needed to know about PCOS and miscarriage. I had no idea that PCOS was as common as it is--so in that light, I felt relieved! I also appreciated the facts about miscarriage, being that I had one last year.
