Book Description

July 24, 1991
"This book will give adults confidence in themselves as reformers and in their children as scholars." -- Parents Magazine "A thoughtful guide to the problems that exist in schools today and an ample resource for arriving at solutions....Useful to parents trying to make sense of their children's needs [and]...also a fine primer for new board members or board members whose expertise lies somewhere outside education....An inviting exploration, steeped in anecdotes and examples of good and bad practice." -- American School Board Journal

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Asserting that a single standard for school excellence will best insure all children's future, the authors examine schooling from a broad and theoretical perspective. Though there are a few chapters on home support for learning , their main focus is on how to determine the culture of a particular school and evaluate classroom environment. The authors discuss and criticize learning theories, show how basic subjects could be taught in more meaningful ways, and evaluate testing, grading, tracking, and magnet schools. Above all, they stress parental involvement in educational reform. A provocative addition to the current literature on the subject.
