Outdated,
By L. Ward Holdridge (Southport, NC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making Cabinets and Built-Ins: Techniques and Plans (Paperback)
This book was written in 1986 and, by my estimation, was outdated when it was written. No updating has been done in 14 years. This means that numerous tools and materials we use every day were not covered. This is the worst book I have purchased from Amazon.

Good background for the novice,
By A Customer
This review is from: Making Cabinets and Built-Ins: Techniques and Plans (Paperback)
The other reviewer found this book outdated, and perhaps it is not for an intermediate or advanced woodworker. But I found it very helpful in explaining the basics for a novice. The introductory chapters on grades of wood, reading plans, etc. give a lot more background information than most other beginning woodworking books I've looked at. The book also discusses the differences between working with wood, plywood, and particle board. I like the fact that it tells how to do things using hand tools (for those of us who can't afford to spend thousands of dollars for a shop full of power tools in order to begin our first project). The book also explains how to make joints using several different kinds of tools. The book is easy to read, but could have more figures/pictures for some techniques. I would recommend it for anyone who is just starting out in woodworking.
