4.0 out of 5 stars a good source for new ideas, January 9, 2004

This review is from: Making Creative Baskets: Alternative Materials, Simple Techniques (Paperback)
I really liked this book for the inspiration it provides. There are so many unique projects using everyday materials found in craft and hardware stores. Some of the projects help beginners to learn weaving methods using simple materials (i.e. newspaper, oaktag) instead of requiring time consuming harvesting and preparation of a natural material prior to learning the basket technique. The introductory notes that explain each method of weaving, such as plaiting and twill, are very helpful and well explained. Where the book fails is in its project directions. They are very hard to follow if you have not used that particular method of basket making. I am fairly experienced at coiled baskets and wanted to try some plaiting and twill. While the introductory notes were very good, the project directions were confusing at best. The book is best for experienced weavers wanting to try a new material or look; it is not a good source for beginning weaving. Still, it is very enjoyable to flip through for new ideas.
