Book Description

October 28, 2002
Start with a bejeweled goddess made from an easy “napkin” fold. Then try Pamela Hastings’ angelic “Clarity” doll, Arlinka Blair’s “Kuba Spirit” dressed in bold African textiles, and others. “Go beyond what you usually think of as cloth dolls and create a wonderfully imaginative collection of figures.”—Doll Castle News. “A good buy for large public libraries and textile collections.”—Library Journal.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Making a malleable cloth doll is the closest you can get to enjoying godlike powers. When you create and embellish the doll's human form, it sometimes seems to take on a personality of its own. For this intermediate-level cloth doll-making manual, Le Van designed three blank canvas doll patterns representing three human qualities: clarity, energy, and strength. Then she invited five doll artists (Tracy Stilwell, Lynne Sward, Arlinka Blair, Pamela Hastings, and Barbara Carleton Evans) to create dolls based on the patterns. The result is a gallery of individual art dolls that can be used as a jumping-off place for your own creative efforts. In addition, there are 12 pattern projects with full-size patterns and guidelines for making dolls that range from a simple "Wily Woman" doll with a bent wire frame to an elaborate, embellished "Personal Symbol Figure." Those new to the art of cloth doll making might start with Jodie Davis's Teach Yourself Cloth Dollmaking or Mariam Gourley's Cloth Dolls: How To Make Them before tackling this one. A good buy for large public libraries and textile collections.

I made the mistake of buying an art doll magazine while out on an "artist date" not too long ago. As if I didn't already have enough projects going in many different directions, that got me hooked into the fascinating world of art dolls. These are not your standard Raggedy Anne dolls!

Ms. LeVan has provided a great resource to start dabbling in the world of art dolls if your medium of choice is fabric, as mine is. She provides three basic designs, each quite different. A pattern that will need to be enlarged is provided within the pages, and directions for the construction of the basic design are included. The directions are quite thorough, but do require some basic sewing knowledge, although this only needs to be "basic."

The fun is seeing the variations of each design done by several well known doll artists. They really show that though each design is very simple, with imagination, the artist can enjoy making each doll unique. There is also a gallery of special project dolls using a variety of techniques, with instructions for these as well. If that isn't enough to inspire, a photo gallery is included to provide more inspiration.

I have already made one of the basic dolls, "Energy," adding my own touches to the design. I found the instructions to be very easy to follow and enjoyed working with the design. The size is just right for anyone who is participating in a round robin doll project, keeping postage costs down.

If you have been intrigued, as I was, by the art doll movement, this book is a great starting point from which to join the movement.

A terrific book for both the beginner and intermediate dollmaker. Contains patterns, instruction, and many, many pages of creative inspiration from other notable dollmakers. I LOVE this book. I bought it as a beginner and I'd say I'm now an intermediate and it's still inspiring me!
