Editorial Reviews

Review

“A great book . . . a must-read for anybody who cares about peace in the Middle East, who cares about the survival of the state of Israel, who cares about America’s relations with Israel.” — Alan Dershowitz

“compelling, thoughtful, and highly readable . . . Muravchik is not an apologist for Israel or the mistakes it has made, but he is an advocate for fairness and balance—and for one having one set of standards to judge Israel and its neighbors. Rarely has a book been more timely.” — Ambassador Dennis Ross

“At once impassioned and clear-headed, this abundantly-researched discussion of Israel’s decline in world public opinion is necessary reading for all who care about this highly vulnerable country.” — Philip K. Jason, Jewish Book World

“One of the very best books ever written on the ongoing war the Arab/Muslim world has been waging against Israel since the day it came into existence.” — Norman Podhoretz

“An exciting and essential read for anyone who cares about Israel's survival.” — Martin Peretz

“A . . . fascinating book about the origins of ideology.” — Tevi Troy’s “favorite books from this year,” National Review

“Remarkable . . . lays out the best liberal pro-Israel arguments . . . The very arguments raging today against Israel . . . are all discussed and masterfully defeated.” — Elder of Ziyon blog

“This book may not lift your spirits, but if you want to understand why the world seems to love to beat up on Israel it should be at the top of your summer reading list.” — Aaron Leibel, Washington Jewish Week

“A powerful indictment of the West’s serial moral failures regarding Israel and the Middle East conflict.” — Sol Stern, Mosaic Magazine

“The best source available to show readers how and why Israel is seen as a victimizer and oppressor, not as a David facing a vast array of Arab reactionaries” — Ronald Radosh, The Weekly Standard

“The campaign to delegitimize Israel is a call to arms, a danger . . . If things were ordered rationally, Making David into Goliath would stop that campaign dead in its tracks.” — David Pryce-Jones, National Review

I heard someone talk about this book and with recent events in the Middle East I found myself wanting to know more. To my surprise it was a fascinating read that held my attention all the way through. It also caused me to take a hard look at my assumption that both sides share fault in a conflict. Muravchik's research is so extensive and his discussion of it so intelligent and balanced, without ever being preachy, that I came away with a very different perspective. Some of what Muravchik presents is shocking in its documentation of the way public opinion can be (and has been) negatively manipulated, and how Israel's well being has been jeopardized because of it. I think a book that can hold your interest, cause you to reexamine your assumptions, and make you feel that what you've learned is very important deserves five stars.

Josh Muravchik's latest book is "must" reading for anyone who wishes to understand the weird twist of fate that has brought Israel's beleaguered liberal democracy so much abuse, particularly from those who support the idea of liberal democracy. He has performed a service of tremendous valueby addressing a subject little analyzed or written about. The book deserves to become a focal point of discussion.

I've always been sympathetic to Israel, but I often encounter a lot of arguments against it. This book helped me familiarize myself with the answers to those arguments. Political books aren't usually on the top of my agenda to read, but this book was so interesting and clearly written that it was easy going -- a definite plus.

Well-researched and extremely well written. This book is a must for anyone who is trying to understand how a once loved nation has become hated by so many and singled out to a higher standard than any other nation. The author starts from the beginning, detailing how Israel was a nation favored from abroad and seen as the underdog. But soon things changed in 1967 when Israel flexed it's military might and took possession of other lands. As a result of the 67 war, the narrative switch. Israel was no longer viewed as a small nation against the giant Arab world, but a mighty military machine fighting against a perceived defenseless people, the Palestinians. Also, adding to the spiraling opinion was the raise of communism which viewed the terrorist groups as national liberation movements. The author also details the exploits of the late Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky. As vice president of Socialist International, Kreisky worked to move Socialist International against Israel. Although Israel was a member of Socialist International, Kreisky used his position to marginalize Israel and bring Yasser Arafat to speak before the group. Using his Jewish background as a shield, Kreisky made his attacks against Israel more and more vicious. Also, detailed is the shifting paradigm in universities with the introduction of Edward Said's Orientalism. The author deconstructs Said's literature as well as his pseudo-personal history, exposing it as a fraud. The author, however, does not ignore internal issues. Adding fuel to the the fire was election of Menachem Begin whose public appearances left much to be desired. The Lebanon war also was not looked upon favorably, causing more disfavor. Then, there is the so called "new historians" who made it their mission to re-write Israel's history. All of this and more is explained with great prose. Highly recommended.

Cogent, balanced, deeply researched, readable -- and on such a complex and polarizing topic, that's no small achievement. Highly recommended for those both familiar with (and opinionated about) this subject or anyone seeking a clear concise presentation.

Josh Muravchik's book couldn't come at a more critical time. Once again, Israel finds itself portrayed as the aggressor as rockets fired by Hamas target Israelis daily. The fact few Israelis have died is testament to Israel's Iron Dome defense system--but, make no mistake, Hamas and its accomplices in Gaza want to wipe Israelis off the face of the earth. Muravchik's book details in engaging narrative how it came to be that much of the world has turned its back on Israel and embraced its enemies. He writes with clarity, deploying his considerable research skills to unfold a story that is as fascinating as it is tragic. This book is a must read for anyone trying to make sense out of what is going on in the Middle East at this moment.

I'm a casual follower of foreign policy but heard Mr. Muravchik on the radio talking about his book and thought I had to buy it immediately. I read the book over two days. Everything in the news makes more sense understanding the context of hate in which Israel finds itself and how credulous its once allies in the West have been to Palestinian propaganda and attempts to portray Israelis as war criminals. Was a wonderful, enjoyable read. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the depth of hatred and vitriol and lies that Israel faces every day.

This book is essential for those who support Israel but are troubled by the steady stream of condemnation from the government, the United Nations, and the media.

The book seems objective to me, although I may not be in a position to judge that. One exception might be the chapter on Edward Said, which spends a fair amount of time questioning Mr. Said's biography. But even that chapter is, I believe, factual. My criticism is more one of emphasis.

Mr. Muravchik is also critical of some of Israel's own actions - including both ends of the Israeli political spectrum.

I believe the book's real value is to remind us of the fine line Israel must walk to balance world opinion and its obligation to Jews world-wide to the very real threats to its security.

I would have rated it higher, but my layman's grasp of Israeli history made it somewhat difficult to follow the arguments. I had to do a bit of homework to fully understand Muravchik's points. For example, he details many of the issues Anwar Sadat had to consider before Camp David - most of which were outside of my recollection of the time. In his defense, if Mr. Muravchik had provided that level of detail, the book would have lost most of its readability, which was key for me.

I would recommend buying the book and reading it carefully.
