Beautiful Designs,
By Holly Newton "Holly" (CT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making Designer Freshwater Pearl Jewelry: Techniques and Projects for Creating Classic, Contemporary, and Casual Jewelry (Paperback)
I was delighted to find this book. One look at the cover and a flip through the pages and i knew I had found the jewelry making book for me. I have been making jewelry for years and like to get new ideas. The designs in this book are beautiful! Even though the projects look easy enough for a beginner and don't require anything special, the ideas and final pieces of jewelry have me itching to get in my workroom, and i consider myself an advanced jewelry maker. The extra tips, suggestions and additional photographs are also great.

Great Designs-KNOT enough Knotting Techniques...,
By Book Bahr "MAB" (Howell, MI, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making Designer Freshwater Pearl Jewelry: Techniques and Projects for Creating Classic, Contemporary, and Casual Jewelry (Paperback)
Great book if you are looking for spectacular design ideas, rudimentary bead/pearl stringing and jewelry making instructions with detailed pictures. But if you are an advanced jewelry designer/maker and are looking for the historical ways to string and especially knot pearls, then this is not the book to buy.
Three words in the title; Designer, Techniques and Classic made me think I had found a book that would teach me the multiple "Old Fashioned/Classic" ways to knot a string of pearls. What was offered was good instructions on how to use a "Modern" pearl knotting tool, and a suggestion to read the directions and watch the video that comes with the tool to learn how to knot pearls. No offense to the author or tool, but I thought a designer level book would offer lessons on the several other manual and I guess "Historically Corect", for lack of a better description, ways to knot pearls. The author did such a good job with every other aspect of this book. I would say, for a beginner, this is an awesome Pearl Book! Simply for its many beautiful design ideas to spark the imagination this is also a great book and well worth the investment. I hope Amazon shares these comments with the Author so she can make a good book great by including the additional, traditional knotting techniques.

Wonderful Pearls,

Good intro and info about the different types of pearls and how they are formed. Great illustrative photos. This book gives excellent basic instruction on getting started but also appeals to the more experienced artist giving well designed and immaginative projects. A useful list of resourses at the back of the book gives addresses of suppliers. An essential book on all these counts.

I have never done any bead work, but was interested in finding out more about pearl jewelry making. This is a wonderful book for finding out about both the craft and artistry of pearl jewelry making. I would recommend it to beginners like me to advance their knowledge and also to those more advanced to stimulate their creativity.

This is a great way to introduce yourself to pearls and making necklaces. I was pleasantly surprised! I recommend it to any other beginner jewelers who was to learn the real techniques and different products that are out there.

Disappointing in the extreme,

Designer pearl jewelry!! You jest, surely?
The first 37 pages simply rehashes material that is found in every basic beading book. I presumed that once one gets to the "designer" stage, one has mastered basic techniques and can recognize and use basic tools. The rest of the book is devoted to the projects which range from the downright (insultingly) simplistic to the downright ugly. The section on wedding jewelry, which was of particular interest to me, is possibly the most disappointing of all. This book will only suit an absolute beginner who has no creativity or imagination. I regret wasting the money on this most uninspiring book.
