"Making a Difference" is an introduction to fundraising and nonprofit management. It gives a straight-forward description of how these entities are organized, and presents various techniques helpful in building and sustaining them. This book describes fundraising, marketing, public relations, and financial management. It has a practical hands-on approach, with examples of the techniques described

Approximately nine million people are employed by more than one million nonprofit organizations in the United States. Some work only in a specialized area, such as fundraising. This book gives them an opportunity to see how their own work complements that of the rest of the organization. Board members and volunteers, who often have much interest but little preparation for their important task, can use this book for self-study or for board development sessions. It will also be of interest to students in management programs, which often only covers management of f! or-profit entities.

From the Author

Fundraising is an essential fact of our American life, especially when government funding is in decline. Raising money is universal - for schools, churches, cultural preservation, hobbies, sports and art. Most pursuits in life are underwritten by fundraising, public and private.

Olaf Engvig has been a fundraiser who solicited millions for restoring an iron ship from 1866, saving about 80% of the original vessel. His success inspired many related projects. In honor of his achievement he received a gold medal from the King of Norway, the first one ever given to a rescuer of historic ships.

During the same period, Mona Engvig worked as a music school principal, establishing two music schools. In her field of work, fundraising became a major issue. She wanted more education in this field and therefore completed a Masters Degree in Arts Administration, and received Golden Gate University's Arts Administration Reward.

Based on our past experiences and the knowledge acquired during Mona's studies we decided to write a book on the subject, the book we should have had ourselves when we started working in the nonprofit sector decades ago. We have therefore written this guide which in an easy way describes the tools-of-the-trade for anyone who is, or plans to become, involved with nonprofit organizations. We are confident that our book will give you much needed knowledge and guidance in what to do.

Good luck in your endeavor of making a difference in other people's lives. Thank you for spending time and energy on services essential to your community!

Mona and Olaf Engvig
