"This is a must-read for all educators and learners who are committed to enhancing and succeeding in teaching and learning at a distance. From theoretical grounding in adult learning to very unique, practical tools and suggestions that translate theory into successful practice, this book brings forth essential new insights to the distance education arena. From the Author

The field of distance education has sprung up around us with astonishing speed and resilience. Wherever we look we find new opportunities to learn at a distance. Institutions are shifting their focus to include new groups of learners who may never travel to see the campus. Distance education has become a significant part of today’s educational landscape.

The rush to become a part of the distance education scene has become such a loud call to action that in many cases the very last consideration is given to the real center of learning – the learner. It is imperative that distance education initiatives become grounded in a concern for the learner and work to build their programs, their technology, and their curriculum with this concern in mind. Making the learner the central part of a distance education program, empowering learners to help focus distance education initiatives, and encouraging learners to provide feedback to institutions on their distant education plans are essential to guarantee that educational programs delivered at a distance will be successful in helping people learn and change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginning, June 10, 2009

This review is from: Making Distance Education Work: Understanding Learning And Learners At A Distance (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for DE beginners. It is well-organized, provides clear and simple explanations for best practices, etc. I would use this is a supplemental text in a first-year college-level course. Alone it's not quite enough but it is a very good beginning.
