5.0 out of 5 stars Really good insights
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Krispy Kreme's doughnuts. They're pretty average if you ask me. But I'm amazed at how this company has become such a cult icon. A friend told me that when a store opened by her home, people were camped out the night before waiting for the doors to open. What other doughnut shop can claim that? So I do respect the company's business...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Pieces Between Shameless Self Promotion
After finishing Trump's Art of the Deal, I moved on to Making Dough. This book is one step above go dog go and reads like a guide to why Krispy Kreme is great written and published by Krispy Kreme (I thought marketing literature was supposed to be printed on all glossy pages?).
There is little advice presented that would be easily applied to your own buisness,...

So I do respect the company's business sense. I bought this book to see how Krispy Kreme has been able to build such a great business. It was very interesting to read about the subtle and not-so-subtle techniques the company uses to get people in the door.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, October 26, 2003

This review is from: Making Dough: The 12 Secret Ingredients of Krispy Kreme's Sweet Success (Hardcover)
As a marketing executive, I've been following Krispy Kreme for years and have long admired the company's techniques. This book expertly analyzes what the company has done to turn itself into a household name on a shoestring marketing budget. I also found it interesting to learn how the company keeps its minimum wage workers happy even in strong economic times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable story, October 25, 2003
This review is from: Making Dough: The 12 Secret Ingredients of Krispy Kreme's Sweet Success (Hardcover)
This was one of the most enjoyable business books I've read in a long time. Fascinating stories and solid insights into what has made this company so successful. You don't have to love the company's doughnuts to benefit from it.

The great thing about Krispy Kreme is they've taken a simple formula and turned it into marketing gold. This book does an excellent job of showing how they've done it. While a lot of it seems like common sense on the surface, as the book shows, the company has executed these strategies brilliantly. One of the most entertaining business books I've read in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at an American original, October 27, 2003
This review is from: Making Dough: The 12 Secret Ingredients of Krispy Kreme's Sweet Success (Hardcover)
Krispy Kreme doughnuts are a way of life in my homestate of North Carolina, but other parts of the country are catching on. "Making Dough" is a well-researched look inside the doughnut company and how it became a national phenomenon.

If you like Krispy Kremes, you're guaranteed to learn something new and interesting. But even if doughnuts aren't your thing, "Making Dough" shows how a small company can become a big-time success.

I've followed Krispy Kreme since I was a kid growing up in the South. It was interesting to learn how this company developed and what they've done to make their doughnuts something people are willing to drive miles to get. I've been waiting for years for someone to write Krispy Kreme's story, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. This book is chock full of great stories and the secrets of the company's success.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, the Krispy Kreme story, November 13, 2003

This review is from: Making Dough: The 12 Secret Ingredients of Krispy Kreme's Sweet Success (Hardcover)
I finally got around to reading this book. I actually bought the book two weeks ago, but people at work kept "borrowing" it from my desk. It seems like everyone wants to read about Krispy Kreme around here. This well-written look at an American original offers a fascinating look at one of the most intriguing companies I've ever run across. It's always amazed me how passionate people are about Krispy Kreme. Now I understand why. Although this company isn't perfect, as the book points out, it does a lot of things right. More than that, instead of just being a stuffy business treatsy, this book actually is fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy Book, October 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Making Dough: The 12 Secret Ingredients of Krispy Kreme's Sweet Success (Hardcover)
I've been in love with Krispy Kreme since I tasted my first doughnut some 15 years ago. I bought this book more to learn about the company's history than its business lessons, but came away with a better understand of why Krispy Kreme is so popular. They not only know how to make good doughnuts; they're very shrewd businesspeople as well. But even if you don't care about the business part of the company, I think you'll really like reading the many stories about Krispy Kreme's unique history. I sure did.

There is little advice presented that would be easily applied to your own buisness, unless you are a KK franchise holder. This is amazingly disappointing since I love the product.

My Advice.... Go to the library and take the book out for free, buy a few gallons of gas to get to krispy kreme; Buy a dozen doughnuts; Sit and skim the book for an hour, you will still be up $5 which you can spend however you want.

This thing reads like an advertising company wrote it for Krispy Kreme. I was hoping to find a bit more in depth history, and what led to the leveraged buyout from Beatrice Foods in the 80's. This book offered 3 mere pages on that. It does not talk about the competition, as far as this book appears, there is none.

Sure, the doughnuts are great. For those looking for an unbiased view of the franchise, however, keep looking. This book is nothing more than a written commercial.
