5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
There are not many books our there that are specific to dressing the porcelain dollhouse dolls that are truly 1" scale. This one covers all the bases. Numerous full color photos illustrate the completed outfits. There are patterns for every era and every type of individual from the gardener to the bride and every age - from the baby to grandpa. Every costume I have...

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title-Should Be "Dressing Dolls' House Dolls"
Of 192 pages, less than 14 address making dolls. Of those 14 pages, 90% is devoted to putting together commercially available kits made by, guess who, Sue Atkinson. Granted, the diagrams and patterns can be used to create many beautiful and historically authentic outfits for 1/12 scale dolls, many of which are displayed in striking photographs.

But, if you...

This review is from: Making and Dressing Dolls' House Dolls in 1/12 Scale (Hardcover)
Every costume I have made using this book has been a success. The instructions are clear and best of all, the clothes fit. As a bonus, there is a section on wigs, hats, and accessories. Get this one if you have ever even THOUGHT about dressing a dollhouse doll, or, if you want to research the proper clothes for a particular period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!, July 3, 2003
Making and Dressing Dolls' House Dolls in 1/12 Scale by Sue Atkinson is an absolute beauty of a book! I truly go with the advice of another reviewer, the book is marvelous just for the photos alone! The dolls and dresses are a feast for the eyes. I have never had the honor of viewing such a pleasurable book.

But, if you actually want to create your own dollhouse dolls check out "1/12 Scale Character Figures for the Doll House" by James Carrington or "Making Miniature Dolls with Polymer Clay; how to create and dress period dolls in 1/12", by Sue Heaser. Carrington's creations are uniquely sophisticated, (some might be considered almost racy), while Heasers' are more typically "cute". "Creating Lifelike Figures in Polymer Clay: Tools and Techniques for Sculpting Realistic Figures" by Katherine Dewey also does a good job of demonstrating construction of 1/12 scale dolls by devoting a chapter to converting instructions for her larger figures to the smaller scale.

Atkinson probably does give the most explicit instructions for costuming these small dolls, but look elsewhere to learn how to make them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all skill levels and lots of historic fashions., July 19, 2007
By
I use this book all the time, for both dressing miniature dolls as well as a reference for historic periods and the fashions popular for a particular era. There was one thing I wasn't crazy about when I first got this book. The drawings for the patterns as well as the color photographs of completed dressed dolls are almost never on the same page as the intructions for sewing a particular pattern. I now have about a dozen little markers in my book to make it easier for me to quickly find what I need when I'm working on a doll. I also felt that a few more sources as to where to acquire the necessary materials for doll dressing should have been included. The book, with those exceptions mentioned above, is overall very good and extremely helpful. It's one of the only ones available with such detail on dressing 1/12 dolls.

4.0 out of 5 stars great for dolls kit, July 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I agree with a lot of review. The book is great! It has a lot of pattern for everyone and it's really easy to make. The only thing the book missing is making your own doll. it doesn't show how to make a doll, but it show how to assemble doll from pre-made kits.
