Swedish Punks Love To Roll,
By
This review is from: Making Enemies Is Good (Audio CD)
I love bands that can't quite fit into a category, and I was happy to be introduced to Backyard Babies by some musician friends of mine. While supposedly punk rockers, these guys can really ROLL in ways that you won't hear too often from more "standard" punk acts, and their musical chops are impressive. They've got an excellent drummer in Peder Carlsson, who has a lot of funk for a punk - see the sly groove he delivers in "Ex-Files" for example. Lead guitarist Dregen ignores the minimalism that is supposed to be the "rule" among American and British punks, and delivers a barrage of metallic and heavy rock licks that really brighten up this band's sound. One weakness on this album is a slight lack of focus in the songwriting department, as the band is obviously trying to stretch out their sound into new territory. A few songs, especially "Heaven 2.9," stray way too far into pop and merely sound like watered-down Blink 182. Attempts at serious epics like "Colours" and "Painkiller" are delivered with precision but are not entirely believable. But these are just a few missteps, and the album is saved by the full-blast fun-loving rockers that are surely this band's strength. Favorites include "I Love To Roll," "Star War," and "Too Tough to Make Some Friends." Note: If you dig Backyard Babies, check out their more metallic compatriots and cronies the Hellacopters, who have also featured Dregen on a few albums.

Best Band Around,

This review is from: Making Enemies Is Good (Audio CD)
This cd begins with a punch with I Love To Roll & ends with 3 Wise Monkeys still punching you til the end! There is also a song written with Babies by Tyla of Dogs D'Amour called Painkiller. Very very sad song but very Tyla. Then there is Brand New Hate Ginger of Wildhearts help write, one of my faves. The songs like Ex-Files, Demonic Side & Heaven 2.9 are my favourites. But I also love P.O.P. & Payback, the way that song starts oh sexy little Nicke Borg, you go boy. The whole cd is just excellent! Not a disappointment among the bunch. You will hear when you buy it. This cd has lots of kick so be prepared to be rocked. If you like Social Distortion, Hanoi Rocks & Ramones come get this baby!
