Book Description

March 2008
Angela Mohr uses scraps and misshapen runts of gourds to make fun things to wear on your head. With simple tools and supplies already in the house or from a local craft shop, you can make tiaras, barrettes, seasonal headbands, and hatpins and also use gourds to decorate your hats and bonnets. In fact, with a gourd thinking cap, like the one shown in this book, you can create your own projects! Mohr provides easy step-by-step demonstration of how to make and decorate a variety of headpieces.

This review is from: Making Gourd Headpieces (Paperback)
Well when I ordered this book I thought I was getting something that would help me make a gourd hat. I expected some humorous hats/headpieces but I really thought that most of the book would have been a serious attempt at something like using gourds to make a wonderful accessory. But the section on thinking hats is really an insult to the customer who wanted a book for some gourd millenary techniques. The cover as seen on the thumbnail pictures looks for the most part classy. But any serious consideration of this book the person should inspect the book before the purchase.

The instruction of wiring some of the headpieces to a comb is great but the look is not finished. It just looked unfinished. Most of the book any 12 year old girl could design. (12 y/o girls please don't be offended) Most of the examples were just junk; not fit to wear outside of a gourd festival. Part of the instruction was to break the gourd apart. BREAK, BREAK come on now who is going to depend on breaking the gourd in just the correct place to make this crown thing. Instruction should have been about how to measure the head and work that out on the gourd THEN SAW THE GOURD! Would you build a birdhouse by breaking up some wood? What is needed is instruction on how to cut a round gourd to fit the human head.

There is one strange things about the book that at first glance did not bother me but as I was looking more critical of the book was the use of styrofoam heads to model the "headpieces." There is not a human model used in the book. I would like to see some people enjoying wearing these things. Oh you did get to see one person with grey hair in the book but I would like to see more different people. How about something for men. But lets get some humans modeling this stuff. Personally I don't think that the publisher could have even gotten family members of the author to model the thinking cap!

I wanted a book on how to construct barrettes, pill box hats, trim on a straw hat, and head bands. Maybe some basics on using gourds for jewelry/accessories. This was a waste of money. If anyone writes a better book quick get it listed and I will buy it.
