Book Description

September 2006 9 and up4 and up
If you were to join us at the end of almost any evening, or if you were to attend one of our retreats, we would invite you to do with us the Ignatian examen process in which we ask ourselves two questions: For what moment today am I most grateful? For what moment today am I least grateful? We have shared this simple process in over fifty countries, because for centuries prayerful people have found it to be the most helpful way to hear the voice of God guiding them from within.

For example, our readers and retreatants often come to us with questions such as, "Should I change my job?" or "What can help me with my depression?" We usually suggest they spend the next month focusing each day on the examen questions. Such people often return a month later having discovered, from their own experience of consolation and desolation, exactly what they should do more of and less of in order to resolve their problem and find new life.

Since we began teaching the examen process to families, many parents have returned to tell us how it enabled their children to discern what they really wanted in life rather than be manipulated by peer pressures to look for happiness in possessions, drugs, etc. These children, for whom reflecting on their daily experience has become a habit through the examen, have grown up to be centered and self-confident leaders who are able to help create a world filled with life. They have also maintained close ties with their parents, perhaps in part because the examen builds a climate of trust and intimacy in which the most significant events of the day are shared.

Such families encouraged us to write a simple adaptation of our book on the examen for adults, Sleeping with Bread, which they could share with their children and grandchildren. We hope this children's book based on a true story of what healed traumatized orphans during World War II, will help children everywhere to heal their hurts and create a nonviolent world where we can all give and receive life and love. Includes a section for parents and other caregivers at the end to help guide them in supporting their children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for children in families who have undergone recent changes., February 3, 2007
This review is from: Making Heart-Bread: (Hardcover)
Making Heart-Bread is more than a picturebook - it teaches young readers how to take in emotional and spiritual nourishment from grateful memories of the day, and how to trust in the love of one's family and caretakers. Told from the point of view of a young girl who learns to make both tummy-bread and heart-bread from her beloved grandmother, Making Heart-Bread recounts the grandmother's childhood, when a terrible war left her on her own, until kind people took her in and cared for her. "No matter how often the grown-ups tried to tell us that we were safe now, nothing seemed to help. When we ate our bread at supper, we were afraid each bite might be the last food we would ever have. One day, one of the grown-ups had an idea. He saved some bread from supper. At bedtime, he gave each of us a piece to hold. Holding our bread next to our hearts, we could finally sleep in peace. All through the night, the bread reminded us, 'Today I ate and I will eat again tomorrow.'" Making Heart-Bread is not specifically a religious book; the simple techniques that it offers to reassure oneself that "Today I was loved and I will be loved again tomorrow" are a wonderful blessing to children of all backgrounds, and especially recommended for children in families who have undergone recent changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Spiritual Story, December 8, 2006
This review is from: Making Heart-Bread: (Hardcover)
Making Heart Bread (Paulist Press, September 2006, hardcover, 32 pages) by Matthew Linn, Sheila Fabricant Linn and Dennis Linn is not just your typical picture book.

The themes of love, security and nourishment go beyond the simple story shared in the pages you read your child. In the book, a grandmother and her granddaughter share the experience of making two kinds of bread: tummy bread and heart bread. In making tummy bread, they share together the fun of baking and providing physical nourishment. Grandma then recounts to her grandchild the origins of making "heart bread", something she learned as a refugee child in war.

Without giving away the story, I want to share that "making heart bread" involves sharing with your child a time of quiet prayer and reflection at the end of each day, based on the Ignatian spiritual process called "the examen".

Making heart bread encourages you and your child to look back at the best and most challenging aspects of each day. This wonderful picture book, featuring delightful illustrations by Francisco Miranda, reminds us that a time of daily reflection with our children is both essential and blessed.
