3.0 out of 5 stars Good on basics
Good basic methods book. I would have liked to see a few more "WOW!" projects. If you are a beginner and want a basic how to manual, this book will do the trick.

Personally, I prefer Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles", because it has more technical information, glaze recipes, firing information, etc., but if I were starting out to make tiles on my own and taking them elsewhere for firing, I think Pozo's book would be a better choice.

The techniques represented were unique. There were many examples of other clay artists works. Ms. Pozo presented step by step photo processing for each technique. She started with clay basics and moved forward through firing ranges, shrinking, warping, cracking and glazes. She gave excellent usable information on the installation processes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clay person, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Making & Installing Handmade Tiles (A Lark Ceramics Book) (Hardcover)
This is an essential book for anyone undertaking clay tile making. Many claim to be that essential book, but based on what is available in my local library, this one really is it. Her projects and those of a range of others included in the book are both great illustrations of the many processes involved and useful for stimulating the creative ideas of her readers.
I'm sick of renewing my library copy. I'm gonna buy my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY nice, overall primer to tile making. BEGINNERS will love this book!, April 21, 2008

I have been accumulating ceramic tile books for some time, and this one is very good as a beginner volume showing several differing techniques on how to make your own tiles, as well as paint and fire existing tiles. It shows how to make differing shapes, how to glaze & carve, as well as how to properly install what you've created. There is a little bit of everything in this volume, as well as very clear instructions and photographs. I enjoyed reading this very much, and will refer to it more in the future as I work in tiles.

4.0 out of 5 stars artist as artisan, December 17, 2008

The essential basics of preparing very low fire raw manufactured moist clay into a tile and the absolute basics of glaze/ slip decoration styles, with a few projects to illustrate potential in the above . The author then goes on to describe simple framing, hanging, mounting projects. In a short time the author wants to quickly transition you from a visual artist into a sculptural artisan. She certainly knows her onions, and the book is aiming at being concise ,which this is.It has led me -a traditional potter into successfully fabricating my own tile.I can't believe the quality of color photos can be bought in a quality bound hardcover at this price. She gets my vote in having the text descriptions of each process accompanied with the photos of same on the same page.

My feeling is while good,it is too narrow a course in decorating and glaze treatment to be my sole guide on the making and decoration of handmade tile, but its the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Great basic info on ceramics, glazes, firing, etc. Perfect for those who want to dabble, most of the info in this book is geared at beginners, but it is a great starting point for playing with clay and glazes. Not just for making tiles or mosaics... what this book teaches could be expanded into making jewelry, table tops, one of a find mosaics, walk ways, counter tops and more. Great step by step teaching and filled with photos to make learning easier, A great reference book if you are new to clay or wanting to add something different in your jewelry making. Worth every dime I paid for it.

Very good info, and enough of it was unique enough to make it well worth purchasing over some of the other Tile How-to books. Good source for anyone, such as myself, who is interested in delving into a new avocation.
