I believe these booklets were listed as pocketbooks and I'm thinking this is good for a young boy that is facinated with knights and castles and slaying a dragon to rescue a princess.I thought it might take him a snowy weekend to finish a book and then call Grammie to tell her all about it.When I recieved the booklets I could not believe it, they were a 10 minute...

This review is from: The Making of a Knight (Paperback)
I bought this book because my son (James) is very interested in the Middle Ages, King Arthur, etc. Since he is 7 years old and the book begins when Sir James is 7 years old, he really enjoyed it. The details on weapons, armor, etc. added a great touch and were not only interesting, but educational. The book contains some vocabulary which required explanation, but in general he was fascinated. The illustrations are excellent and we read a few pages at a time each night so we could discuss them in detail. I hope Mr. O'Brien writes more about the adventures of Sir James.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and painless for parents, February 26, 2005
This review is from: The Making of a Knight (Paperback)
My son, nearing three, adores this book and has had it read aloud every night for weeks. The language is direct and uncomplicated without being condescending or dumbed down; the book is packed with interesting facts that are made easily palatable by the storyline of James' progress toward knighthood. Pictures, while painterly, are sufficiently realistic to be informative. Highly recommended for your young knight in the making. If only there were more of this type of book available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knights were a hit!, December 28, 2008

This review is from: The Making of a Knight (Paperback)
My grandson wanted figures of Knights for Christmas. His mother is a great reader and makes a point of reading to him about subjects he likes. I wanted a book that would tell about Knights and not focus upon violence. This book was perfect! The book preceded the figures and he was able to enjoy both.

5.0 out of 5 stars The making of a knight, June 11, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Making of a Knight (Paperback)
My three and a half year old son says, "I love it." "I like knights, and I like when he swings the wooden sword." "I like when he becomes a knight."
Mother says, "I like that it teaches my son not to pick his nose."

I picked this up on a whim because I am a Patrick O'Brian fan (think Master and Commander, etc). The author of The Making of a Knight spells his name differently, but he has a similar ability as a writer.

Although I've been an Amazon customer since the early 1990s, this is the first product I've ever reviewed. This book is that good! It's the kind of book your kids or grandkids will want to have read to them over and over. Great story; beautiful artwork. Nicely done!

And it doesn't hurt that you'll enjoy reading it too.

This book is an entertaining educational trip through this era. It is packed with wonderful pictures and intricate details that bring this period of history to life as it weaves the story of a young boy's journey to knighthood with the realities of the day. I bought it for a six year old and it easily held his attention. Highly recommended.

I believe these booklets were listed as pocketbooks and I'm thinking this is good for a young boy that is facinated with knights and castles and slaying a dragon to rescue a princess.I thought it might take him a snowy weekend to finish a book and then call Grammie to tell her all about it.When I recieved the booklets I could not believe it, they were a 10 minute read. The "pocketbook"cost was 6.95.Good price!! That cost me nearly 33.00 to ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!Last time buyer for things I have not seen in a store and know exactly what I'm getting. Then again I'd best buy them there so I can afford to buy more with the shipping costs. Now a gift becomes a stocking stuffer. oh yeah....this gullable girtie bought 2 of these booklets in the same vein.

This was a fun book that both my boys(ages 10 and 3) loved reading and then commenced to reenact the book in play. This is a simple yet well done book.

I bought this for my four year old, wannabe knight. He LOVES it. Especially the pages about weapons (he's a boy after all). I loved that it stuck so much history in there without boring him and without him realizing it. Kudos to the author--great idea and great execution.
