Book Description

September 1, 1998
Taking a holistic approach, this handbook is designed for those wanting to use drama and theatre to explore personal and social issues in their work with young people. Developed from ten years of active research in community settings, the authors' approach to theatre-making draws on a range of disciplines, including theatre in education, community theatre, youth work, group work and conflict resolution. The book should be suitable for use by both experienced theatre practitioners and beginners, and provides a model that is adaptable for work with different groups and different timescales: a day, a week, or a period of months.

I have been wanting to devise a performance piece with my 8th graders for years. This is a step by step guide on how to create your own play. It's fantastic.

This review is from: Making a Leap - Theatre of Empowerment: A Practical Handbook for Creative Drama Work with Young People (Paperback)
The book is intended as a guidebook for drama coaches working with young people who are homeless, drug addicted, or afflicted in some other way. The word "psychodrama" is never used. The authors do not explain whether they disapprove of the word or whether they think the scope of the book falls outside of the definition of the term.

The first section deals with public relations. The second section deals with indoor games which might be used in an encounter group or a convention workshop. Many of those games seem embarrassing to me. If the authors really thing the games provide a great enough benefit to warrant so much embarrassment, they should take the burden of proof.

The rest of the book is mostly truisms. I do not think I would get very much out of the book even if I were a member of the intended audience.
