As the Media Director for Marriage Equality USA, an all grassroots group solely devoted to securing marriage equality at the state and federal level, I think this book is a MUST READ for any same-sex couple considering marriage.

I loved how the book is organized for easy reference and provides clear answers to the vexing legal ambiguities caused by the legal limbo and patchwork of rights and obligations.

Not only does it cover all the important legalities to consider before getting married, civil unioned, domestic partnered etc, but it also has fantastic and practical advice of how to ensure you are compatible with your potential mate on all the essential aspects of married life - in fact - I think they book offers helpful guidance for any couple considering marriage.

There is an excellent history of the movement chapter in the beginning that explains the cultural shifts within each generation since Stonewall which brings us to the front lines of the marriage equality movement.

I strongly recommend this book.

This book, by attorneys Frederick Hertz and Emily Doskow, is intended for same-sex partners who are considering the growing options when it comes to legally codifying their relationship.

The book offers a historical background for conventional marriage, and rightly points out that until fairly recently, marriage was primarily an economic arrangement and was, more often than not, arranged by the parents of the betrothed. With the increasing recognition of self-determination in the 18th Century, more couples in the Western world began marrying "for love". Even in the 21st Century, however, arranged marriage is still prevalent in much of the world.

Making it Legal then goes to explore the changes in Europe and North America over the past decade which have led to increasing recognition of same-sex relationships. Hertz and Doskow deal with this potentially controversial material even-handedly - giving a balanced appraisal and encouraging couples to decide for themselves whether to "tie-the-knot"...or not. The authors also discuss legal contingencies when it comes to dissolving a legal relationship.

Although this book is likely to go out of date soon (unavoidable, considering the rapidly shifting political landscape), it should be read by same-sex partners who want to know "where they stand" legally.

A personal note: After reading this book, my partner and I have decided, even though we live in a state where same-sex marriage is not recognized, to get legally married in New England - which we intend to do next spring.

I was very pleased with this book. As a member of same-sex couple that has taken a number of steps to protect our assets and relationship through the legal channels available to us in California, I was interested to see if we had covered our bases. I found this book to be a pleasure to read and very informative - I could have used it a few years back! I especially appreciated the narrative style, with examples of couples and their situations to help illustrate points. I was surprised (and delighted) to find a section detailing some of the financial benefits of remaining legally single.

Overall, an excellent introduction to an issue that continues to evolve. A must-read for those who are considering marriage, or those who just want to make sure the basics are covered to protect themselves and their partner.

Like many guides, there are relevant topics for each individual. Some of the issues may not relate to your situation now, but may in the future. The strength of this particular guide is that you can read the relevant chapters without reading the entire book.

The book contains much information, legally and financially for same-sex couples, whether you are thinking of getting married or just sharing your financial obligations. The book takes the reader through all of the topics chronologically from the history of the movement to the benefits of legally getting married to divorce and estate planning.

Topics covered include:

-The history of the same-sex marriage movement
-The rules of marriage and divorce including the benefits as well as the complicated tax issues
-The problems with regard to federal nonrecognition as well as state nonrecognition of same-sex marriage
-Transgenger issues
-Parenting issues
-Prenups
-Estate Planning
-A relationship recognition chart of the states that have legally recognized same-sex partners in some way and what they have recognized in those relationships.

There were several sections about being emotionally ready for the commitment, as well as whether you and your partner are marriage material, that I, at first, found irrelevant and in excess, but after reading the entire book, I understood where the authors were coming from. As attorneys they gave many examples of relationships not working out, couples divorcing, and the legal, emotional, and financial messes that occured as a result. These anecdotes throughout the book gave a clearer picture of the legal ramifications discussed. This how-to-guide is a must have for any same-sex couple contemplating marriage.
