Book Description

October 14, 2008
Intimacy is one of the great powers and joys of life, yet all too often it gets clouded by miscommunication, a loss of affection, and a lack of mutual support. Here therapist David Richo shows us how to use mindfulness to better understand ourselves and our partners so that we can:

   •  Increase our capacity to give and receive love by recognizing how our past relationships affect our current life

   •  Improve physical and emotional intimacy by embracing the five hallmarks of loving relationships

   •  Resolve conflicts by constructively working with anger, grief, and blame

   •  Move from needy, ego-centered love to unconditional love by addressing fears of engulfment or abandonment

   •  Discover how relationships can be a path to spiritual awakening by practicing mindfulness and loving-kindness
3 CDs; 3 hours.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“David Richo's rich understanding of romantic relationships ties adult connection problems to childhood losses. His formulations sound more profound and soothing—more heart-centered and Buddha-like—than standard social science. With his vocal sincerity and warm connection with his live audience obvious throughout the recording, this is a presentation that people in all committed relationships can savor and grow with.”—Audiofile

Once again Dave Richo gives us an opportunity to learn from someone who seems to understand both the psychological and the spiritual realms of human life. Dave shares both his wisdom and compassion for all of us, as he reveals the importance of journeying into the deeper realms of our existence in relationship. Through his obvious scholarship he brings us techniques to both heal our needy psyches and assist us in rising in Love.

Namaste,

Russ

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want something real.... hear this!, January 13, 2011

I was told to read and listen to David Richo several times by a couple of very well known professional counsellers.... but I didn't. I read so many other books and listened to many talks, but my relationship patterns remained the same.Perhaps it wasn't the right time for me to hear David's words... I don't know. When I eventually listened to his talk and read his book " How to be an Adult in Relationship" it resonated so well with me that I started to make the changes. I can say with conviction that I am different now and have broken some old relationship patterns of a life time, and perhaps many life times! It made me really understand what was going on, very simply, very purely, very profoundly. I would say, don't delay .... get this first!

I have been making use of several marriage help resources since my wife and I had a major issue last summer. Things are going much better with us, but not because of this Audio set. I got this so we could listen to it together in the car and discuss it. I could not find audio sets on the good books that I had read, and this Audio set had gotten very good reviews. However, in my opinion, this set does not deserve the good reviews. I listened to about half of the set before I stopped. I did not feel like the message provided was in any way helpful for our situation and I was kind of irritated by the way the author taught. He often gave the impression to me that he was being condescending. Little comments and jokes were made that gave me the impression that anyone who had a different viewpoint than him was either an idiot or really mislead. I am not sure why exactly I felt this way, but that is the impression I got and it kind of clouded my whole opinion of his message. I do admit that his message seemed to be getting better towards the end of what I listened to, but I could not get beyond the attitude that I perceived in his teaching.

I also had some issues with the way the material was presented. Basically it seemed that this audio set was just a recording of a class he taught and, as such, it seemed we missed out on portions of things that would have been more clear had we been there. A couple of times, both my wife and I would look at each other and say what is he talking about. In any case, I would not recommend this product to any friends of mine. I may try to listen to the rest of the set just to have a better assessment and, if I do, I will update this review if my opinion changes. There are much better marriage help materials out there. "The Marriage Turnaround" by Mitch Templeton and "Love life for Every Married Couple" by Ed Wheat are two books that were most helpful for my marriage.
