From Publishers Weekly

Can there be great sex after 40? Alan M. Altman and Laurie Ashner (The Estrogen Alternative; etc.) use their knowledge as a physician and a psychotherapist, respectively, to offer new medical treatments and communication techniques for overcoming lost libido and boredom in the bedroom in Making Love the Way We Used to... Or Better: Secrets to Satisfying Midlife Sexuality. With aired-out honesty, Altman and Ashner compassionately state the hushed secrets middle-aged couples keep (e.g., "The little blue pill is causing more problems in our relationship than it solves") and prescribe a plan (e.g., for facing the emotional side of Viagra, it's important to realize that self-esteem is an issue for both men and women) to get things back on track. From Library Journal

This collaboration between a gynecologist (Altman) and a psychotherapist/self-help author (Ashner) has resulted in an excellent how-to-correct-problems guide for the 40-60 set. Altman and Ashner prescribe for dry, painful sex, discuss hormonal changes at menopause and at men's midlife, and address negative body image, erection problems, Viagra, and affairsDsexual, intellectual, emotional, and cyber. Their advice is up-to-date, sensitive to individual differences, friendly, well organized, and focused on options relating to medicine/health, including herbal remedies and couples communication. All in all, there are only two noticeable drawbacks: less coverage of nonmedical, technique-based arousal enhancers such as manual and oral stimulation, sex toys, or penile constriction rings and a skimpy resource list. Recommended for its medical coverage, to be supplemented with Lou Paget's excellent technique-based guides, How To Be a Great Lover (LJ 1/99) for women and How To Give Her Absolute Pleasure (LJ 1/00) for men.DMartha Cornog, Philadelphia

5.0 out of 5 stars Revealing Secrets about Sex, February 17, 2001
By
"loonafish" (Evanston, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making Love the Way We Used to . . . or Better (Hardcover)
This book is a must read for baby boomers, or for anyone who is romantically involved with one. Here's why. For those of us who came of age in the Sixties and Seventies, sex was always easy. We're the free love generation, the natural women, the swinging singles. We never expected later in life to lose our libidos. We never expected to routinely be too tired, or have a partner who's never in the mood. We never expected sex to be difficult.

Yet, sometimes it is. If this book is about revealing secrets, that's a big one. Middle-aged baby boomers may have sexual problems. We don't talk about that. That would be admitting we're aging. And that's not easy for us. After all, we're the first generation of adults who dress like kids. We do all we can to stay young. We fight the idea of getting old.

But we are. What a relief to read a book that address these secrets. What a relief to find out we're not alone. What a relief to discover there are easy, simple things we can do - for ourselves or those we love - to feel sexy again.

This book is the first step in revitalizing our lost sexuality. It's an easy read. It begins with quizzes, for women and men, which target relevant chapters. Each chapter contains a discussion of a particular issue, personal examples, and solutions that range from steps to change an attitude, to a discussion of hormone replacement therapy. This book tells us how to put the sparkle back in our sex life.

This book reveals the real secret. You don't have to be twenty to be hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, March 31, 2001

This fun-to-read book is enlightening to say the least! The secrets in the bedroom that are on the minds of so many women and men are exposed along with solutions. Rather than treat sexual boredom or dissatisfaction as either just a medical problem or a relationship problem, Dr. Altman does a remarkable job of doing both.

5.0 out of 5 stars making love the way we used to ...or better, April 1, 2001
This review is from: Making Love the Way We Used to . . . or Better (Hardcover)
This Book is tremendous! It helped me realize that midlife sexual issues are very common. What is even better is that it addresses these specific issues and gives you advice on how to handle them. For years people just accepted these conditions and never educated themselves on how to have a better quality of life. Well I do believe this book is one that every couple should own. I give it *****!
