Excellent Book for Men's Bible Study,
By
This review is from: Making of a Man of God, The: Lessons from the Life of David (Paperback)
Although this book carries a recent date, it is actually a reprint of a book that was first published over 40 years ago. It is not a revised edition, or anything. Just the latest printing. I make a point of mentioning that, because there are some statements in the book that obviously date it and are a bit distracting. But this is a devotional text on the life of David, who lived quite a bit more than 40 years ago, so if you can get past some of the outdated references, this really is a very good book. This book is not heavily theological. It is easy to read, and would perhaps be a good starting point for those who may not have a large familiarity with devotional literature. I have long been interested in the correlation between the Psalms written by David, and the narratives in the historical books (Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles) that outline the events in his life which produced his poetry. So any book on the life of David has an appeal to me. But the life of David is important for another reason. David is, in many ways, a symbol of the identity of Israel as a nation. Jesus Christ is referred to as the "Son of David." And the Old Testament says time and again that God refrained from wiping out one king or another because of his "covenant with David." David was the one king who established Israel as a political entity. His son Solomon actually built the temple, but David designed it. More compelling than anything, though, is the statement in scripture that David was a "man after God's own heart." Who would not be interested in knowing what it was about this man that made him so uniquely appealing to God? Alan Redpath was a British theologian who was, at the time of this writing, the pastor of Moody Church in Chicago. He writes in an easy style, and each chapter is built from a specific text on the life of David. The events in each scripture text are interpreted in the light of how they relate to a general principle of spiritual development in the life of any man of God. This book would be perfect for a men's Bible study. It is easy to read, and is divided neatly into twenty-seven short chapters, each of which would smoothly accommodate an evening study period.

Best writings on becoming a man of God besides the Bible.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Making of a Man of God: Studies in the Life of David (Alan Redpath Library) (Paperback)
This book is not for those who enjoy shallow relationships. But this is a MUST READ for anyone who desires an intimate and fulfilling relationship with God. Although this book is not necessarily written for ministers, every minister should have one and read it over and over. Mr. Redpath helps us understand how God takes us from a salvation experience and trains us through various processes, eventually forming us into faithful and effective soldiers for Jesus Christ. You can believe it: there are no better books on the subject!

Alan Redpath pen these words many years ago but they are still essential for today's man. While not technically written for men (God's Word is profitable for all)it helps guide men through today's world and its pitfalls. This is an excellent tool for counseling young men interested in ministry. If a reader is a pastor, be prepared to buy many copies of this book - you'll never be able to keep your copy! A book worth reading at least once a year.

I just started to read this book. It gives encouragement and at the same time make you deal with yourself. I am only at the 3rd chapter.Even thou the title suggests it is for a "man of God", I think it is for everybody who really wants to move forward in God the right way.

This book is truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is based entirely on the Word of God, in Truth. It will bare your soul to your need for Him. If you let it, the conviction of the Holy Spirit will reveal your weaknesses, allowing God's power to change you. It can't replace the bible, but it does complement it.

One of the most powerful books I've ever read! I would have never deciphered the lessons that Alan Redpath so eloquently presents from the life of David in the chapters of Samuel and the Psalms. This book will definitely challenge your perspective in terms of your relationship with God. Highly recommended for personal or group study. A friend loaned me a copy but I will order one for myself to keep for reference and maybe another to lend to friends. It's that good!

Life of King David,

This review is from: Making of a Man of God, The: Lessons from the Life of David (Paperback)
If you want a book about the life of David with detailed commentaries about what he did etc. perhaps using the Bible as well as other historical books then this is not the book for you. This book uses snapshots of David's life and then proceeds into a long, long exhortation about being a 'good, chosen' christain. Not what I was looking for and I find the tone overly sanctimonious and content judgmental.
