Book Description

October 1, 2002
No woodworking project is more gratifying than making a beautiful fireplace mantel. There is no such thing as a "correct" mantel: they come in every conceivable shape and style, which leaves room for creativity. The 200 color photographs in this guide cover a broad range of possibilities for the craftsperson to consider. Plentiful examples of detailed plans guide the woodworker through the design, construction, and installation steps in mantel making. Also covered is essential information peculiar to mantels—fireproof materials, safety considerations, building codes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical guide for building a fireplace surround, March 1, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Making Mantels (Paperback)
I picked up several books on mantel & surround design in preparation for a DIY project. The best chapters here are on actual construction with detailed directions and photos (about 90 pages of 200 total). Anyone with reasonable woodworking skills should be able to follow the plans. The rest of the book covers design basics and a gallery of various surrounds for inspiration. Quite a bit of useful information for the price.

Not a well written or informative text on the construction of mantels. Styles are simplistic & out dated.
