4.0 out of 5 stars Practical guide for building a fireplace surround
I picked up several books on mantel & surround design in preparation for a DIY project. The best chapters here are on actual construction with detailed directions and photos (about 90 pages of 200 total). Anyone with reasonable woodworking skills should be able to follow the plans. The rest of the book covers design basics and a gallery of various surrounds for...

2.0 out of 5 stars Making Mantels
Not a well written or informative text on the construction of mantels. Styles are simplistic & out dated.

The best chapters here are on actual construction with detailed directions and photos (about 90 pages of 200 total). Anyone with reasonable woodworking skills should be able to follow the plans. The rest of the book covers design basics and a gallery of various surrounds for inspiration. Quite a bit of useful information for the price.

Many, if not most, homes enjoy fireplaces and having a home with one is a selling point. MAKING MANTELS shows average homeowner/handymen they can build a fireplace mantel, providing all the details of so doing from design and mouldings to wood finishing and installation. One can even build in secret panels: MAKING MANTELS uses plenty of design tips and building specs to show how to build a wide range of working mantels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making Mantels, November 4, 2010
This review is from: Making Mantels (Paperback)
We were looking for information on coving a fifty year old painted brick fireplace with tile & wood. It had enough info to get us started with good ideas on how to lay the tiles around the opening and what to use on the old bricks. We are in the process of picking out tiles now. What we need is some free time to move on to complete the project.
