Book Description

June 5, 2001
This wonderful compendium invites mothers and daughters to create lasting family traditions and enjoy a renewed sense of love and appreciation for each other with original ideas for activities they can do together.

Throughout history, mothers have shared their unique creativity with their daughters as a way to strengthen the mother-daughter bond and preserve the essence of family love from one generation to the next. Now Joyce Marlow presents a host of original crafts and projects that mothers and daughters can do together to beautify the home and strengthen these special ties. Designed for women of all ages, "Making Memories" includes ideas for:

Cultivating gardens that bring mothers and daughters to common ground through the splendor of nature Fashioning extraordinary quilts -- from memory quilts to friendship quilts to artistic quilts -- that bring warmth to any home Originating special mother-daughter events like "summer picnic day" that will become lasting traditionsFilming video diaries that capture the uniqueness and beauty of family life Creating "wildcraft" objects from plants and nature for home decoration Sharing love and energy with others by coordinating volunteer projects outside the home

Including interviews with women across the country, who share their family stories and traditions, and Joyce Marlow's own imaginative ideas, "Making Memories" is the perfect way to celebrate mothers, daughters, and traditions.

Amazon.com Review

"I wrote this book," explains Joyce Marlow, "because, as a mother, I wanted to celebrate the many ways in which women weave generations together by passing wisdom and love on to their daughters." To help other women partake in this celebration, she provides a magnificent framework full of ideas, reminiscences, projects, recipes, tidbits of history, and general encouragement so that mothers and daughters of every age can share family traditions and create brand new ones together. Besides the indubitable memory album, Marlow offers extensive general suggestions for projects involving sewing and other needle arts, entertaining, nature crafts, "home arts" (decorating, canning, gardening), genealogy, and holidays and special occasions, as well as observations about life appreciation, spirituality, and the power of feminine mystique. Her graceful writing skillfully interweaves her own experiences with her extensive research--she interviewed more than a hundred women from across the country and incorporates their mother-daughter consciousness as an integral part of her message. Read it cover to cover or dip into at random as the mood strikes: virtually every page exudes wisdom, reassurance, and imaginative ideas. --Amy Handy

From Publishers Weekly

"As the keepers of tradition, women preserve the families of our daughters and granddaughters through the power of knowledge, understanding, skill, artistry, and love," says Joyce Marlow in Making Memories: Celebrating Mothers and Daughters Through Traditions, Crafts, and Lore. Martha Stewart meets The Artist's Way in this style guide for honoring special moments, holidays, achievements and the mother-daughter bond. Rife with keepsakes, hope chests, finger sandwich recipes, knitting and decorating advice (e.g., how to make "the boudoir" into "a place where you can escape the worries of the day") and rainy-day boxes, it provides fodder for mothers and daughters of all ages. 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for Mother's Day, and for yourself too!, May 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Making Memories: Celebrating Mothers and Daughters ThroughTraditions, Crafts, and Lore (Paperback)
Making Memories has so many great ideas and suggestions for making the mother-daughter relationship special. I bought this book to give to a friend for Mother's Day. After leafing through it, I had to buy another copy to keep for myself. I particularly like the section titled Heritage Skills --about imparting women's traditions through quilting, weaving, nature and wildcrafting. There's much more, though, to appeal to moms and daughters in Making Memories. The author, Joyce Marlow, has put her heart into this book, which is lovingly dedicated to her daughter. A book I know I'll treasure, year in and year out.
