Editorial Reviews

Review

"Making Metal Beads: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration by Pauline Warg demonstrates a number of techniques for making beads from metal as well as altering prefabricated metal beads. This book is designed for the metalsmith who also has a passion for beads, which is refreshing to see since metal work and bead work are often segregated for some reason. Warg shows how to use tubing, how to make cold connections, how to operate a hydraulic press, how to form domes with dapping block, and how to enhance commercial metal beads. This includes 25 metal bead projects. While finished jewelry incorporating metal beads is also shown throughout the full-color book, the emphasis is on making the beads, not necessary assembling the finished pieces shown. If you have been looking for a way to combine your love of metal with your love of beads, then this book is perfect for you. It is, however, not for the uninitiated metal person. Granted, there is plenty of "how-to" help throughout, great pictures, (and) loads of helpful text, but those without a lot of metal skills will find this challenging. So be patient. The results, though, are really worth it, because the beads and finished jewelry pieces are gorgeous." - About.com Jewelry Making

"I am texture passionate, and this book has incredible beads with intriguing textures and layers. The book is well written and simple to understand. Every topic is clearly explained with the help of images. The projects are easy to follow, and the step by step is also supported by beautiful pictures. This is definitely a book that needs to be in your collection. Lots of inspiring pieces in this book!" - Lorena Angulo

4.0 out of 5 stars A keeper, January 14, 2007
This review is from: Making Metal Beads: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
I took this book to my advanced metal smithing class and it was an instant hit, nearly everyone thumbed through it and got some sort of inspiration. To be clear, nothing in this book is revolutionary. This books real strength was to show you how to combine familiar techniques and then showing you how to apply those techniques to fabricate metal beads.

Overall this is a very nice book, very well organized, good illustrations. I especially enjoyed the section that demonstrated how to take "blank" silver beads at the bead shop then modify them to suit your purposes. I think that illustrates the overall theme of this book, taking something easy, and then using it in a different way.

I know creating metal beads seems sort of "niche-y" but sometimes creating a chain isn't the right answer, and it's hard to find something that matches your work at a bead store. For that reason alone I would recommend buying this book--you never know when you might need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about making metal beads., September 21, 2006
This review is from: Making Metal Beads: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration (Lark Jewelry Books) (Hardcover)
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced jewelry maker or simply a lover of beads, you will marvel at Making Metal Beads. This is simply the definitive book for making metal beads. There are just so many creative examples with beautiful photos from the author and other beadmakers, along with exceptionally clear instructions. This is a book written by an accomplished metalsmith and an experienced teacher. The book promises "techniques, projects, inspiration" and it delivers all three. The beads run the gamut from complete fabrication from metal sheet, to altering and embellishing commercial beads. Following the well written instructions you can make the beads as described, or use them as a reference for your own creative beadmaking endeavors. In addition to the instructions for creating beautiful beads, there is a section of the book devoted to finishing and stringing them.
