This English edition of Ichbiah's Les nouveaux magiciens (1989) (adapted by Knepper) tells the story of Microsoft's founder and self-made billionaire against the background of the U.S. software and computer industry. Gates, a computer genius since childhood, and Paul Allen formed the computer software firm in 1975. Eleven years later, the company went public. The authors describe the personal computer and software industry and roles of leading companies IBM, Apple, Compaq, Lotus, and WordPerfect. The informative appendixes provide a description of versions of DOS; key dates in Microsoft's history; and a glossary of technical terms, people, and companies. I've read this book 3 times already in the past years. One of the authors is european, and the books gives real insight on the first era of Microsoft. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed. The technical level required to read this is close to zero. It's a great story.

This book is easy to understand. It gives a view of what happened at a critical time with a new technology. (1980 - 1990) It has a timeline and explains all those acronyms you hear but never knew what they were. Here a man was clearly building an empire and it was not simple or easy. You can see how just a small thing affected all our lives. It continues today.
