Book Description

January 1, 1994 0226763471 978-0226763477
In this ambitious book, Terry Smith chronicles the modernist revolution in American art and design between the world wars—from its origins in the new industrial age of mass production, automation, and corporate culture to its powerful and transforming effects on the way Americans came to see themselves and their world. From Ford Motor's first assembly line in 1913 to the New York World's Fair of 1939, Smith traces the evolution of visual imagery in the first half of America's century of progress.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Smith aims to gain a clearer understanding of modernity by focusing on America in the 1920s and 1930s, decades that shaped modernity and the images that represent it. He points to an iconology of modernity in which "six images constantly occur, separately or in couplets: industry and workers, cities and crowds, products and consumers." Then, by reviewing the relationships among factory production, government-sponsored works, documentary photography, industrial design, high art, and other forces that eventually shaped what he calls Life- style modernity, Smith goes on to demonstrate that modernity is more complex than the formalism and aestheticism propounded by the Museum of Modern Art. The photography of Charles Sheeler and Margaret Bourke-White, the paintings of Sheeler and Frida Kahlo, the industrial design of Ramond Loewey and Norman Bel Geddes, and the architecture of Louis Kahn receive special attention in this well-argued and well-documented revisionist view. Highly recommended.
