Good Advice in Less-Than-Perfect Form,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Making Money in Voice-Overs: Winning Strategies to a Successful Career in Commercials, Cartoons and Radio (Paperback)
The massive amount of helpful information in this book is marred by only two things:o It desperately needs some copy editing to remove the sentence fragments and other "word-processing glitches," and o The discussions of technology need to be reviewed by someone with a firmer grasp of how such things actually work. Because of this, I would give it 4-1/2 stars instead of 5 if that rating were available. In the big picture, however, these are minor quibbles with a book that otherwise covers a lot of ground and answers a lot of questions that aspiring voice actors would have. It provides an in-depth look at the voice-over business (with particular focus on Los Angeles) from the perspective of a busy, in-demand performer who has paid enough dues to know what she's talking about, and because it is fairly new it covers recent developments that older books omit. Certainly well worth the modest investment for anyone wanting to know more about this business.

A good starting point but...,

This book has a lot of info for someone who wants to start in this biz. I liked her input on what to include/exclude on your demo tape. However, some of the expert advice is "take classes" and "find an agent" - duh! She also doesn't seem to know much about the nuts & bolts of recording, for example: "take your headphones off if you're making comments about the producer or engineer, they pick up everything." Um, Terry the *microphone* picks up everything regardless of where your headphones are.

The book contains good information, but it is so poorly written and edited that it is, at times, incoherent. I could not get past the first thirty pages.

Frustrating Read and Repetitive,

This review is from: Making Money in Voice-Overs: Winning Strategies to a Successful Career in Commercials, Cartoons and Radio (Paperback)
There are so many typos in this book that it is actually frustrating to read. There is also so much repetition, not in general, but huge paragraphs that can be found word for word three pages earlier. Terri Apple is very good at cheerleading and she obviously knows the business but there's too much emphasis on LA contacts and way, way, way too many text errors to recommend this book. And I'm not talking about grammar. I'm talking about "The re" "and and" or whole words left out. I found myself struggling to read this book. Since it was published in 1999 some of the advice is out-of-date, like carry a pager (pre-cell phones) which is not Ms. Apple's fault, nor her editors, if she had one. I do find her responsible for the content of her book. With so many books on voice-overs out there, I would recommend another.

i loved this book! i'm getting started in voice-over's here in chicago, and ms. apple's book gave me valuable tips that i never knew. her background is extensive and useful to anyone who currently is in the business, or anyone who would like to get started. i was intimidated about the industry at first, but after reading this book, i'm more ready than ever to give it a go!the credibility of the author is obvious, which makes her words valid, and truthful. i plan on taking the wisdom that i learned from this book and using it in my future voice-over career. i have tried other books re: this subject, but no other book compares to that of ms. apple's. i recommend this book highly to anyone who is even remotely interested in breaking in to voice-overs. the tips provided in the book will give you invaluable insight, and allow one to over-come their fears about breaking in the business. i'm very glad i chose this book, the lessons i learned were amazing!

A brilliant guide through the world of voice-overs!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Making Money in Voice-Overs: Winning Strategies to a Successful Career in Commercials, Cartoons and Radio (Paperback)
I've read many books that have too much to grasp. Terri Apple teaches you in a simple, sometimes humorous and easy way to understanding every aspect of voice-overs...with key industry lingo indexed in the back for you to learn...from understanding the business end of this business, to what the producers and companies are looking for, to what many people mistakenly think a voice-over actor is supposed to do, Terri Apple tells it all, and even lets you in on personal experiences she's had. What an excellent book, I'd love it if it came in an audio-tape version! I highly recommend anyone who wants to learn and have a blast doing it read this book, it's the best $13.00 you'll spend!

I read Terri's book with great anticipation. I wanted to see how much she knew; how much I did or didn't know and what she could add to my knowledge. Terri Apple does a fine job of jogging some very well founded reminders to those of us who are professionally making a living from VO work. AND - from the prospective of a beginner, she also spells it out without painting any rainbows. It's being told "as it is."This is a very helpful publication to those of us to need to sharpen our skills and continue learning to hon our skills and a wonderful insightful glimpse into the workings of the world of voiceovers. I recommend this book to Pro's & Newbies.

This review is from: Making Money in Voice-Overs: Winning Strategies to a Successful Career in Commercials, Cartoons and Radio (Paperback)
I'm a personal manager with about 22 clients. They all ask me if I know how they can get started doing voice-overs so they can make money between acting jobs. Since I'm not involved in the commercial business, I tell them that the very first thing they should do is get a copy of Terri Apple's book, "Making Money in Voice-Overs" and read it cover to cover! That answers all of their questions. I've learned a lot from it myself and can now guide my clients a little better. However, I think it's "THE" book to read on the subject. I've yet to come upon another that's so informative, helpful and entertaining. It's a resource book that's a fun read. How often do you find that?

Straight Shooting Advice w/ a Cheerleader's Vibe,
By ALT (NYC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Making Money in Voice-Overs: Winning Strategies to a Successful Career in Commercials, Cartoons and Radio (Paperback)
This book was highly recommended to me by a producer in New York. I read it and immediately knew that this is who I wanted to learn from. Great tips throughout - she really wants everyone to succeed - she's not selfish with her knowledge at all. I subsequently contacted the author through her website (www.terriapple.com) and signed up to train with her while she was in New York. She's widely recognized as one of the BEST in the business; professional, positive, smart and she has a real "Go Team!" attitude that shows in her writing style. Without a doubt, this book is the first step in working toward a career in voice-overs.

Not exactly what I expected,

Personally I expected more helpful hints and techniques for improving your skills in voice-overs but instead most of the book is concentrated on advising how to promote your talent. So if you want to know how to be a voice-talent this is propably not the best book for you, but if you feel you already have what it takes to be a voice-over artist, it gives you advise what to do to get yourself into business.
