More About the Author

Barbara Rylko-Bauer was born in 1950 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and came to the United States that same year. She is a medical anthropologist and Adj. Associate Professor at Michigan State University. She initially studied microbiology at the University of Michigan and worked for several years in research labs. Her growing interest in women's roles and status in society led her to anthropology and she eventually received her PhD from the University of Kentucky. Her work focuses on applying social science to social problems, on healthcare inequalities, health and human rights, and the use of medicine as a tool of oppression. Her most recent book is Global Health in Times of Violence, co-edited with LInda Whiteford and Paul Farmer. Her current project centers on her mother's experiences as a non-Jewish physician in Nazi concentration camps.
