Excellent methods to deal with "toxic" past,
By Sharon E. Cathcart "Why, yes, I am an author" (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)

I own this book in audio form and listened to it in the car during my commute. I found many very good ideas for helping me deal with past issues that have an impact on my current behavior (e.g., passive codependence, based on being told repeatedly in my youth that my opinions and desires did not matter). Wright has a great many excellent, concrete suggestions for dealing with specific issues. I recommend this very highly to anyone doing self-improvement, codependency, or inner child work.

This book opened up my heart as well as my past.,

After reading "Making Peace With Your Past" I realize that the first 20 years of my life were spent seeking approval to receive love. The next 20 years were spent resisting love inorder to feel that I was in control of my life. Now I will spend the next 20 years leaning how to unlearn everything I learned the previous 40 years. Once I've successfully unlearned everything, the last 20 years of my life will be spent learning the true lessons of love, peace and happiness. Even though that sounds a little gloomy I'm sure I'll be a lot happier the last 40 years of my life now that I at least know what path to follow and hopefully stay on. Thanks Mr. Wright. God bless you!Child of God

Notice how many of the reviews for this book relate personal experiences. There is a reason. This is an excellent book for those who need healing. My wife grew up in a dysfunctional home. She carried many scars into adulthood. A wise older lady in our church kept copies of this book in her library and gave them out as needed. She gave one of those copies to my wife, who found great healing within the pages. This is not only a book to read. It is a gift to pass on to others as well.

This review is from: Making Peace With Your Past (Paperback)
THIS BOOK HAS PERSONALLY HELPED ME OVERCOME AND UNDERSTAND MY OWN FEARS. NEVER BEFORE HAVE I EVER READ A BOOK OF THIS NATURE THAT WAS WRITTEN IN LAYMANS TERMS. I REMEMBERED THINGS THAT I THOUGHT I'D FORGOTTEN. I HAD UNLOCKED PAST HURTS AND WAS ABLE TO CONFRONT THEM. THIS BOOK ALLOWED ME TO OPEN MY EYES TO BE THE PERSON I AM TODAY AND TO LEARN TO FORGIVE NOT ONLY MYSELF, BUT ALSO THE INDIVIDUAL WHO INFLICTED SO MUCH PAIN IN MY PAST. I HAD THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO FACE THAT INDIVIDUAL AFTER 18 YEARS OF HIDING THE PAST AND TELL THEM THAT I FORGIVE THEM. MY GREATEST JOY WAS WHEN I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE SALVATION MESSAGE TO THAT INDIVIDUAL AND HE GAVE HIS LIFE TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO CARRIES EMOTIONAL SCARS FROM PAST HURTS. WHAT A BLESSING TO NOT ONLY BE RELEASED EMOTIONALLY FROM THESE HURTS BUT TO ALSO KNOW THAT I DON'T HAVE TO PASS THEM DOWN TO MY CHILDREN. I AM A LIVING TESTIMONY TO THE WONDERFUL HEALING POWER OF A MIGHTY GOD! I WOULD LOVE TO THANK MR. WRIGHT FOR ALLOWING HIMSELF TO BE A MIGHTY VESSEL, THROUGH HIS WRITINGS, TO BRING HEALING TRUTHS THROUGH THE GOSPELS TO MY LIFE. I HAVE PERSONALLY BOUGHT MANY COPIES OF THIS BOOK TO PASS ON TO OTHERS I KNOW WILL BENEFIT FROM READING IT. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING TOOLS ANYONE COULD POSSIBLY OWN.

Yesterday, while doing some spring cleaning of my bookcase, I came across this book. As I paged through it, I realized I had never read it. I know I've had this book on my shelf for at least a couple of years. I'm not sure why I never read it. I am familiar with Dr. Wright's work and have benefited greatly from his work in the past. At first, I was tempted to just toss it in the discard pile. But decided to read it first. Boy, am I glad I did.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with coming to terms with the wounds of the past. This book deals with a variety of subjects includig resentment, pefectionism, depression and others. Dr. Wright is very good at avoiding psychobabble. His writing is from a layman's perspective. He offers some very helpful and practical exercises to go along with the writing. This book has brought so much healing and restoration into my life. It feels like a huge weight has been lifted. If you are struggling, do yourself a favor. Get this book. Even though Dr. Wright is a Christian psychologist, I think that this book would also benefit non-believers. I also highly recommend Dr. Wright's other books. |
