This review is from: Making Places Special: Stories of Real Places Made Better by Planning (Hardcover)
This book was recommended to me before making a site visit to Chattanooga, one of the come-back communities that is featured in it. I should say that I only read the Chattanooga chapter and the "bonus" chapter on Wichita, which is included on a CD at the back of the book. The Chattanooga chapter is quite detailed and provided some useful background information for our visit, but it is written in a fairly dry style that fails to capture the energy and excitement that we actually found on our visit, nor does it give a real sense of what has actually been accomplished. It would have been helpful, for instance, if the author had said a little more about what impact Chattanooga's revitalization has had on key outcomes such as employment, family income, or crime.
