Book Description

March 1997
The ability to make stunning jewelry is no longer confined to metalworkers, silversmiths, potters, woodworkers, ceramicists, and jewelers. Now you can learn how to make incredible items out of the new modeling clays and achieve amazing effects, such as the ability to mimic precious metals, porcelain, wood, and stone. No more expensive kilns either! This clay can be hardened using a traditional baking oven. Polymer clay comes in a vast array of colors and can be mixed to achieve further colors. Extremely versatile, even after being in the oven it still can be cut, filled, sanded, and painted. Simple techniques are explained for making many pieces in a wide variety of styles. Over 50 projects are presented in a clear-cut manner. If yon are a beginner to this relatively new craft, you'll love the wonderful introduction; if you've been modeling clay for some time, try the many brand-new techniques.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

There are a number of different approaches to the popular craft of working with polymer clay, which is baked at low temperatures. Sue Heaser demonstrates the following possibilities for this versatile material: make it into colored canes that resemble Italian millefiori glass; model it into shapes, just as you would with regular clay or porcelain; or press it into molds and paint it. Sophisticated polymer clay aficionados may not be drawn to Heaser's bright animal and flower shapes, but this is a particularly good primer for those interested in the material's modeling qualities. The jewelry, buttons, and hair accessories are well described and make excellent projects for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, detailed book, but poorly produced, March 16, 2000
By
Ivy (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
Making Polymer Clay Jewelry is a wonderful book for those who work with the medium or aspire to. The book is well-written and a lot of fun; it would be enjoyable for anyone who is not already expert at working with polymer clay.

The content is quite good. The introduction covers tools, materials, and basic techniques; the remainder of the book is projects. The twenty projects show polymer clay's versatility and utility very well, and the instructions are clear and detailed. The photographs are plentiful and attractive, and the frequent illustrations contribute a great deal to the book's clarity.

I do wish that the author had included the amount of clay that each project would require. Many of the pieces require mixing clays to produce specific colors, and without any idea of how much clay will be used, it's hard to make enough, but not too much, of a color you may not need again.

The most serious problem with the book is the quality of the binding. The copy I have is so poorly bound that the spine is loosening noticeably, and I've had it only two days. I would suggest that anyone who purchases this book have it immediately cut and spiral bound; this will also enable the user to keep the book open to a specific page while working.

All in all, a very good book, but the publishers should have paid closer attention to the quality of its production.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent polymer clay how to book for everyone!, June 20, 1998
This review is from: Making Polymer Clay Jewelry (Hardcover)
As a relative newcomer to the craft of polymer clay art, I need instruction! Typically, the only avenue available to me at a reasonable cost is through reading instructional books. I look for books with good photographs and illustrations, as well as clearly written, detailed instructions. It's also nice if the instructing artist has a variety of projects to choose from. I am happy to say that this book fills the bill. And it's not just about jewlery. There are many other projects in the book, mostly small scale pieces, buttons, fantasy dragons, wizards, cottage miniatures and more.

The projects are easy to follow and easily adaptable to the users personal tastes. The steps to complete a project make so much sense and the projests turn out so well, it's a joy to use this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide to making jewelry, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This book has something for everyone. There is a section on stringing and findings to give general info. There are elegant pieces, fun pieces and just nice jewelry and the instructions are very clear. This book is great because while it has specific projects, it also gives you the skills and techniques to come up with your own designs.
