During the Johnson administration Linowitz acted in the dual role of ambassador to the Organization of American States and representative to the Inter-American Committee of the Alliance for Progress. During the Carter administration he was involved in the Panama Canal Treaty negotiations and was Carter's personal representative to the Middle East Peace negotiations. Linowitz devotes more than half of this book to a detailed account of his time in government service. He also provides a brief overview of the development of xerography and the early history of the Xerox Corporation, of which he was chairman of the board. Because Linowitz was involved in sensitive international negotiations these memoirs shed some new light on world leaders such as Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Anwar Sadat, and Menachem Begin.
