Gr 5-8Another in a series designed to entice the lover of high-tech, high-performance, high-speed machines driven to the inch by equally high-performance risk takers. The slick, colorful cover is akin to a stock car shellthe exterior does not reflect the reality inside. Dull, static black-and-white photos do little to enhance a bland text that often repeats itself as the author describes the creative and construction processes that evolve into a NASCAR stock car. Some terms in the glossary dont appear in the text, and calling whiskey-running Southern moonshiners and other Prohibition producers of alcoholic beverages independent businessmen seems to take political correctness awfully close to the wall. Oh, well. For more colorful reportage, try George Sullivans Burnin Rubber (Millbrook, 1998).Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
