This review is from: Making Records: The Music of Legendary Producer Phil Ramone (Audio CD)
This CD is actually a companion piece to record producer Phil Ramones' 2007 book release "Making Records", an insiders account on the music business. In 1959 Ramone established A&R Recording, an independent recording studio forever on the cutting edge of new recording technology, right through todays digital era. He quickly gained a reputation and has produced records for a wide range of artists, from Burt Bacharach, to Sinatra, Paul McCartney, Pavarotti, Madonna, Etc. He is noted for recording Marilyn Monroes' "Happy Birthday" to JFK. Ramone has had a special relationship with Billy Joel producing the very first commercially released CD ever, "52nd Street". This SONY disc gives us a sampling of his Grammy winning talent. Some highlights are Tony Bennett dueting a very different version of "New York State of Mind" with composer Joel. Bennett is also featured with James Taylor in a snappy little version of "Put on a Happy Face". Micheal Bolton does a lukewarm cover of Marvin Gayes' "Sexual Healing" and Barry Manilow swings like Sinatra on "I've Got the World on a String". A rarity, "It's Tough to be a Man" is preformed by Ramones' short careered wife Karen Kamon. Liza Minnelli provides a little comedy with her tongue twisting cutsey "Liza With a "Z" ". Concluding the program is Barbra Streisands' immortal "Evergreen". This is a nice eclectic set! You'll have to buy the book as regretfully no annotation of any kind is included.
