4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good album.
This album would seem like pure genius if A. I didn't own their first one, "Growing Up," which is better; and B. they trimmed about four songs off of it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is this the Angry Fist cd?
I finally bought Making the Road, after giving good praise on their "Angry Fist"release years ago. If I am correct this the songs of this release sound almost identical to those on"Angry Fist". Lack of innovation. I have listened to this twice already and I am not pleased with this release.

This album would seem like pure genius if A. I didn't own their first one, "Growing Up," which is better; and B. they trimmed about four songs off of it.

"Making the Road" finds the band playing with genuine hardcore ("Making the Road Blues" and "Just Rock"), instrumentals ("Tinkerbell..."), and of course sustaining their melodic Fat Wreck punk style as well. The songs are generally a little darker than on previous albums, and a few are among the band's best. About the only problems are the lags in quality. Tracks 8 and 9 aren't great, and are followed by the novelty cover of "Green Acres." And then tracks 14-16 are all very slight, either weird instrumentals ("Tinkerbell") or just kind of short and uneventful. Cut most of those 5 songs, and you'd have a much stronger and more cohesive album.

All in all, it's definitely worth buying, but go for "Growing Up" first. It remains Hi Standard's best work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good CD, May 15, 2002

This CD is kinda weird to hear for the first few times, but once you get used to the Japanese singing, it makes it that much better. It's a great CD.

I really recommend this CD. I'd like you to listen first.
I love #5"Dear My Friend" , #6"Stay Gold" and #17 "Starry Night".
You can't accept their message without a tear.
I hope you'll enjoy with this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Japanese Punk, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Making the Road (Audio CD)
A friend of mine from Tokyo, Japan introduced me to this band. At first I was a little aprehensive about Hi Standard. I thought they were going to be really cheezy; however, they turned out to be damn good. Some of the songs are just plain stupid (Green Acres Cover) but cool in their own sort of way. Make no mistake, Hi Standard can rock like any other great punk band. Chances are, if you are considering buying this album, you should.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Punk Albums Ever, September 21, 2005
This review is from: Making the Road (Audio CD)
Hi-Standard is not only one of the best songwriting bands around. They are also some of the most talented musicians in the punk genre. This CD is fun and engaging the whole way through. I especially like the jazz flute track. You owe it to yourself to check out this album.

The promo sheet for this calls these guys "The Japanese Beatles." Boy, are they wrong. Hi-Standard, for those who don't know, are a Japanese punk trio, who, more or less, sound like the majority of the Fat catalog: Medium-fast tempo, boring lyrics, semi-melodic, and extremely bland and generic. For some reason, these guys are huge in Japan, and over 400,000 copies of this CD have sold there. What a waste of plastic. I guess if you're addicted to Fat nad you feel like you have to own everything they put out, regardless of quality, this record is for you. For the rest of the public who DON'T always buy an album based on the label it's on, skip this and save your money for the new Consumed album.
