5.0 out of 5 stars Have lots of books on NLD - Like this one best so far
I can't put this book down. I've read it two times already, and plan to read it again and again. This book is unlike all the others I've read on NLD. 2.0 out of 5 stars waste of money
While I don`t mind reading examples of other peoples children, the examples in this book got old, fast. This book is not a good book if your child is non verbal or is not high functioning like the examples in the book. The steps used to solve the problem involve mapping out a hypothesis! Ok, et me go grab my freshman Psych notebook.

This review is from: Making Sense of Children's Thinking and Behavior: A Step by Step Tool for Understanding Children Diagnosed With NLD, Asperger's, HFA, PDD-NOS, and Other Neurological Differences (Paperback)
I can't put this book down. I've read it two times already, and plan to read it again and again. This book is unlike all the others I've read on NLD. It breaks down all those "quirky things" about NLD into their own chapters, providing real-life stories, and giving suggestions on how to handle situations that fall under each NLD characteristic. Other books explain NLD, which is good and necessary, but this book goes farther - it puts you into the mind of the NLDer. I am grateful to the mom and the therapist who collaborated on this book. I do plan to read it again - as soon as I get it back from my son's school teacher! :) (P.S. This book is an easy read - 14 short chapters, but full of "a-ha" moments.)

This book should be in everyones library that is dealing with a child on the autism spectrum! It defines how they think differently from the normal neurological child. Excellent book!

This review is from: Making Sense of Children's Thinking and Behavior: A Step by Step Tool for Understanding Children Diagnosed With NLD, Asperger's, HFA, PDD-NOS, and Other Neurological Differences (Paperback)
I am a step-parent of a 15 year old son with NLD. I knew for years that there were issues and couldn't put a finger on it. Then a change in psychiatrists came through with what it was and then the questions were answered. Most of the questions anyhow. Having raised 2 sons of my own as a single parent you think that you have this parenting thing down, well not so with a child with a disability. This book has helped in so many ways to not only answer some of those still unknown questions, but gives a lot of help in dealing with the many issues that surround children with NLD. The information presented in this book is from a mother's point of view with a child with NLD and it really hits home as she discusses the feelings that go along with raising her child. This has opened a whole new world for myself, my stepson and for my husband as we look forward to a more positive and productive life for our son!

This book provides an excellent tool you can use to evaluate why a child with a Neurological Difference does what he or she does. It has helped me tremendously in really looking at how my child with PDD-NOS thinks.

My son was recently diagnosed PDD-NOS, and this is one of the books I bought for research. I feel like much of my time with him is spent trying to understand how he is thinking or why he does the things he does, and this book provides really good insight into the mind of someone with a spectrum disorder. The "theory of mind" concept really resonated wi me and really helped put my sons actions into perspective. Excellent book, written with lots of examples, and very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool, September 18, 2009

This review is from: Making Sense of Children's Thinking and Behavior: A Step by Step Tool for Understanding Children Diagnosed With NLD, Asperger's, HFA, PDD-NOS, and Other Neurological Differences (Paperback)
I've been looking for a book to help explain my child's behavior to teachers. This book demystifies the behavior of kids with NLD, Asperger's and similar neurological differences. It offers great suggestions for how to effectively respond to the inevitable conflicts that will arise due to misunderstandings. So often these kids look very typical and go along just fine, and then surprise their teachers and peers with some unexpected comment or behavior. The authors give an excellent problem solving model to use to help adults figure out what went awry and how to help the child learn a more adaptive response.
