From Library Journal
At the direction of the National Commission on Social Studies in the Schools, Jenness, a writer and former executive director of the Consortium of Social Science Association, has prepared the first in-depth study and assessment of the social studies segment of the curriculum since the classic reports of 1918 and 1934. He traces the history of the discipline from the 1890s to the present, including major efforts at analysis and evaluation. His coverage is comprehensive and his documentation thorough. He also provides a perceptive and objective analysis of the contents and methods of presentation of the subjects traditionally included in this area, while describing typical patterns of organization in American schools, testing practices, the preparation of teachers, goals, and recent concerns. His style is scholarly but highly readable. This work will undoubtedly have a tremendous impact on the profession. For all collections.
