Book Description

September 2001
"Be not afraid, only believe," Jesus told the heartbroken Jairus when word came that the man's daughter had died. Centuries later, as author Wayne E. Brickey reminds us, the Savior gives us the same admonition. Drawing on decades of study and personal experience, Brother Brickey shows us in Making Sense of Suffering that afflictions are brief gifts from God's gentle hands. Our challenge is to bear our afflictions while reconciling our hearts to the will of the Father and the Son. "Mortal suffering makes lasting improvements in the eternal self," the author writes. "It turns up the volume on God's voice to us, and it turns up the volume on our pleadings to him." Filled with poignant examples of belief and endurance, Making Sense of Suffering helps us exercise faith and overcome fear. For anyone touched by disappointment, disease, disaster, and death, this important book offers comfort and provides valuable insights into the blessings promised to those who endure their trials on the road to eternal life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is a great reminder of how much we can benefit from suffering., October 29, 2001 By Verlee S I love this book. There are soo many examples of why suffering and trials are soo important for our lives, and for growth. When I read it, I can't help but feel grateful for my trials. I am also reminded that maybe mine aren't soo bad. We really are blessed through our trials. I know that our Father and Savior love us, and will carry us through. Thank you Wayne Brickey for putting your words on paper and sharing them with us. This one really helps, October 23, 2008 By Rachel I read this book after my dad passed away very suddenly. It really helped me keep an eternal perspective on the topic of losing a family member. It would also be good for any type of trial. --This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very helpful book, November 18, 2002

I read this book during a serious illness. The forty chapters average 3 pages each. Each chapter explores one thought in clear language that can be grasped even by someone very ill on pain medication. The book gave me hope, comfort, and strengthened both my faith and my will to endure. Each chapter used quotes from the Bible, Book of Mormon, and other LDS works to flesh out its concepts, but the book would be helpful to any Christian. The book is divided into 4 sections. Each section has an illustrated page which presents an additional idea that summarizes the section, so you end up with 44 topics to think about. Chapters that helped me the most include: Visiting Here in Weakness, Glimpses of Growth, He Searches the Heart, Dispelling Fear, He Delivers, Surrounded by Angels, His Comfort, The Inward Miracle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, March 25, 2009
This review is from: Making Sense of Suffering (Hardcover)
This book is an absolute gift for anyone going through and trying to understand suffering. It helps you to realize the growth that can occur during trials and how our patience helps refine us. It provides comfort by reminding you that you are not alone and by giving solid advice on how to find strength. The author uses scriptures, examples and beautiful language and the short chapters make it easy to read. Instead of giving excuses for why God allows suffering it helps you see purpose and find hope.

This book is amazing! It is full of truth and the Author is absolutely wonderful! I highly recommend reading this especially when there is a lot of suffering going on in your life. It helps to remind us what the Savior has done for us and that the trials we have in our life will only make us stronger if we just turn to Him.
