Book Description

October 1, 1995 5 and up
A collection of language and craft products contains all the patterns needed to create unique books, such as a volume shaped like a boat or a bus, or a title on the environment made from recycled materials.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-5?This title provides basic directions for making a simple book or folder and then presents a variety of design ideas. Very little in the way of materials is required. Any grade or type of paper, as well as cloth, foil, plastic, etc., either found or purchased, will work. The layout is attractive and the illustrations are good-quality, full-color photographs. Children working on their own, however, may get stuck on the details of enlarging and transferring patterns. The volume will appeal especially to lower-elementary and preschool teachers, as well as to librarians. As simple as this craft idea is, it is extremely adaptable to any number of lesson plans, will work well with young children, and will also appeal to older children. It is likely that any home or classroom will have something lying around that will make a nicely shaped book, a fact that is advantageous for recycling odds and ends as well as for a spontaneous creative experience.?Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6, younger with adult help. Children adept with scissors and interested in a change-of-pace project may want to try their hand at creating one of these cleverly shaped books, which can be given as gifts or made to accommodate journal entries, poetry, or a special writing project. Directions are straightforward, and although the pictures aren't step-by-step, they are usually clear and plentiful enough to illuminate the construction process. The book is loaded with designs, and there's lots of advice on how to match theme and color to content and how to add cute jacket details such as moving parts and window flaps. A separate section of patterns for tracing is included, as are directions for enlarging as necessary. Stephanie Zvirin

This review is from: Making Shaped Books (Paperback)
Lots of great ideas for making shaped books - from dinosaurs to butterflies. Designs are simple and effective. Templates are included to get you started. Great project for early elementary students or for adults to give to children (I'm planning to make some books for my niece and nephew and found lots of inspiration in this book).
