Handcrafted wood boxes, particularly those of a small size that are featured here, are lovely items to treasure and, let us not forget, to actually use as containers for all kinds of little items. First the author presents general directions, which take the reader from learning about basic tools to selecting and preparing stock, to sanding, and, finally, to finishing. Then come profiles of 31 outstanding box makers with directions for making specific projects they have had special pleasure creating. A very useful and attractive addition to the crafts collection. This book is full of exceptinal work! Unfortunately, it is not as technical as I thought it would be. In my opinion, it was written more as a showcase of the work it presented. It did very little in the way of explaining such fundamentals as how to select the wood for your project, or guide the reader in honing their own design and technique. If you are interested in learning the art of box making this is not the book for you. I would suggest Box-Making Basics: Design, Technique, Projects by David M. Freedman, which I purchased along with this book.
