After a scandal of Olympic proportions, Vince Dawson has lost his job as a diving coach and is on a downhill slide. So when he sees Austin Brody at a local pool, diving like a trained athlete, he thinks he's found his ticket back to the big leagues. Austin is the least likely man to go to diving meets. He dives for beer, smokes, and works double shifts as a welder. He thinks Vince might be a little crazy, wanting him to try diving competitively, but he's willing to give it a shot. What Austin isn't willing to do is let Vince rule him, and he argues about everything from waxing to wearing Speedos. Used to young, up-and-coming athletes who fold under pressure from their coach, Vince finds Austin's independence baffling; and hot. The two find common ground, gradually working toward being more than just friends, but can they compete? The world of a professional athlete takes money, time, and hard work. Austin and Vince are both willing to fight for what they want, but will they be able to work their way up the ladder to the kind of elite competition it will take to get Austin noticed?

A rather tame one from Sean.,

I am pretty disappointed with this one from Sean. This story about an ex-diving coach trying to revive his career after discovering a raw talent is lacklustre compared to Sean's previous efforts, the marvelous "Between Friends" and "Amnesia".
Both Vince and Austin are quite dull characters and the storyline seems to lack credibility. Austin is diabetic and his case seems severe as he needs insulin injection. Could such a person really achieve top athletic status ? Sean probably intends to create some anxious moments with Austin's illness. These moments are there but could have been better explored emotionally.

Vince Dawson, former Olympic diving trainer, discovers Austin Brody diving for bets and beers at the local city pool. Vince's career ended three years ago in scandal. Finding Austin, the most talented self-taught diver he's seen, Vince has a shot at coaching again. Now all Vince needs to do is convince Austin that he's good enough to go professional and find sponsors who won't want Austin to find a different coach. Dealing with Austin proves more difficult than with past divers. Vince is used to working with kids who are used to being told what to do, not men who are used to making their own decisions.
I just loved Austin in Making a Splash, he's got this whole "I can do it myself" attitude. With Vince being a few years older, he knows what needs to be done and getting Austin to go along is a struggle. Where these two men don't see eye-to-eye on whom is in charge of the daily routine, when they hit the sheets or whatever's closest... sparks fly!
