the forgotten TMNT featurette,
By golgotha.gov (Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Making of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Behind the Shells (VHS Tape)
THE MAKING OF TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1991)a.k.a. BEHIND THE SHELLS Directed by Michael Danty approx. 30 minutes This video is basically a featurette for the second TMNT movie (the Secret of the Ooze). Meaning that it has clips from the movie along with the director (Michael Pressman) and producers talking about how great it was to make it and how everyone should see it. This part is fairly standard, although the director says that the fight scenes in the second movie were made to be more slapstick and less weapon oriented due to some complaints from parents after the release of the first movie. There are also some brief segments where the turtles appear "in character" as though you are behind the scenes with actors on a movie set. The tape also has some things about the TMNT phenomenon in general. Creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are both shown sketching the characters and they explain how they came about for the original comic book. Another highlight which is dealt with at length is where they show everything required to make the turtles appear lifelike on screen. You have a choreographer telling the people in the costume how to move, then another guy using a remote control for the animatronics in the face, then a third person who dubs the voices in during post production. It really is great to see the folks from Jim Henson's creature shop doing what they do best. In case you were wondering, there IS a part addressing the "ninja rap"! This video doesn't go very far in depth but it has some neat footage, and besides you can get it used for pennies nowadays!

Way too short,
By Jocko (Norway) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Making of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Behind the Shells (VHS Tape)
I love TMNT, I really do. I loved `em ever since I was a kid, and when the DVDs came out, I was very disappointed to see that there was no bonus material included. So when I found out about this VHS, I bought it right away. But, don't be fooled. The tape only lasts for 25 minutes, where 15 of those are just a guy talking about TMNT 1 and 2, while you see clips from the first two movies. Pretty much like a regular movie trailer. So that leaves 10 little minutes for behind the scenes footage and interviews. If you are a big fan like me, you'll enjoy those 10 minutes, but even a die-hard fan, has to admit that 10 minutes is way to short. You get to see how the actors and puppeteers work together, which is really exciting, but that's about it. It's worth the time, but not the money. So just wait for the new TMNT movie to come out, because they'll probably re-release the old movies then, hopefully with the Behind the Shells documentary included.
