Making Theater,
This review is from: Making Theater: Developing Plays with Young People (Paperback)
With the passion and wisdom that have made him one of our leading educators, Herbert Kohl has wriotten a wonderful book about how he has done theater with young people and how you can too. He tells how to * explore improvisation with young people * develop significant themes out of improvisation * use dialogue and monologue as starting points for helping students begin to write their own plays * develop full performance * adapt plays and stories for performance. He also includes generous excerpts from plays and stories that are particularly good examples. But Making Theater is not just a book with technical advice about the theater, it is a book that puts that advice in the context of working with real children. Kohl provides wonderful descriptions of adapting - with his students - Alice in Wonderland, Hamlet, Antigone, and other great works, and performing them for the community. Kohl shows how you don't have to be an expert to do worthwhile theater with young people. All you need is a genuine interest in theater and a liking for kids. Most important, Kohl understands the ultimate goal: involving everyone in meaningful group work that is fun. --- from book's back cover
