About the Author

Ed Claessen was always intrigued by mechanical things. From steam locomotives on the Great Northern Railway to Caterpillar equipment and building roads, he never missed an opportunity to watch the action. So in 1973, when the State of Minnesota offered a bonus to Vietnam veterans, Ed spent his money on a Caterpillar Sixty tractor. That purchase has lead to nearly forty years of research and tractor restorations. It is from those projects that Making Tracks has emerged.

Sue Claessen is a self-named read-a-holic who will start a novel at 10 p.m., finish it at 2 a.m., and be up for her job with the U.S. Postal Service at 5:30 a.m. Sue has dabbled with writing short stories while also penning newsletters for some hometown organizations. Making Tracks is her first published book.

Both native Minnesotans, Ed and Sue have one grown son, Dan, and still live on the same land in rural Waverly that they moved to when they were married in 1974.

Format: Hardcover
Being the grandson of C.L Best, it is my opinion that this book is long overdue. Although Daniel Best and Benjamin Holt both played important roles in California agriculture, it was the genius of C.L. Best that founded the Caterpillar Tractor Company that we know today. Why C.L was overlooked all of these years is beyond me, but because of the diligent research and work by the Claessens the true story of my grandfather comes to light. This book is not only an easy read but most informative.

This book, about C.L. Best and the transformation from the Best Tractor Co. to Caterpillar often is redundant from one chapter to another, covering much of the previouse chapter before moving on. It is, however, informative.
Daniel Best, was my great grandfather, and Leo my great Uncle. I lived with my grandmother in Daniel Best's victorian house for several years. This book clarified much of my family history regarding the Best name.
The story could make a good movie script.

Format: Hardcover
The authoritative resource on the early history of the Best family. C.L. Best built a agricultural equipment firm that later became the Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1925. The authors did an enormous amount of research, but it is an easy read. Well worth the money.
