This story hits the spot for laugh out loud, fun reading!
Juli is a an attractive, thirty something, woman who has apparently jumped around a lot in her career life. It's sort of okay she is in between jobs because she now has a mission to deliver her uncle's ashes to a watery grave in the Caribbean. Juli decides to play in a newlywed game the night before her charter cruise. It doesn't matter that she just met the man - the prize is $1000.00 and with a quick system they can at least try.

Alex is an executive VP who has just been laid off months before being vested in his pension. He and three other laid off employees have devised a plan to intercept an illegal diamond shipment from their former boss. They figure they're owed the money and they'll get some revenge. The night before they head out on their heist he meets this crazy woman who pulls him into a newlywed game. This behavior is a bit impulsive, but what the heck...why not?

The next morning a dopey Juli stumbles onto what she thinks is her charter boat but instead is the boat Alex and his mates have engaged for pirate purposes. They have their secret plans and don't want a stranger joining, even if Alex says she's "his wife." They don't believe Juli is innocent and in truth she has her own secrets which are revealed in surprising circumstances. The crew decide to let her ride along rather than have her blow the whistle on them before they can implement their act of piracy. Juli's unexpected talents come in handy and she starts to feel like she could maybe "fit in" for a change.

The other crew members have quirky personalities too. I especially like the former football player, Cody, who has found his niche as the crew's creative gourmet chef.

When I first learned about Making Waves, the debut novel by author Tawna Fenske, I had high hopes that she might be a new contemporary author that I would love. The cover quote on the front of Making Waves describes it as "Hilarious! A wild, sexy romp with a fresh, fun take on love." Hence my problem with cover quotes. I know that they are promotional, and therefore exaggerations and sometimes not exactly revealing or truthful and the story contained within the pages. And to be honest, the cover quote on the cover of Making Waves isn't misleading in any way, because the book is fun and at times laugh out loud funny....but because of the quote I think I had unrealistically high, misplaced and unfair expectations of this new to me author being like a beloved author, Jill Shalvis, who writes some of my absolute favorite contemporary romances...and it wasn't, much to my disappointment.

Juli Flynn is a genius, literally. And like most geniuses, she has a problem connecting with people and fitting in and settling into a life with purpose. She's as infamous for her IQ, as for her failures in both life and in love. She's quirky, smart and fun and supposedly absolutely gorgeous.

Alex Bradshaw is a forty something executive who has devoted his life to the pursuit of professional success to prove that he is worthy. After being dumped by his fiancée years ago for a Dentist who could offer her the kind of life, and the money that she wanted, he defines his self worth by his title and his bank account. So when he's given his pink slip with a drained bank account he is left with those old feelings of insecurity and the only way he knows to get back at his unscrupulous boss and fill his empty coffers is to become a pirate.

The Short Version:
Quirky, sexy and funny, Making Waves is definitely a book to escape in. Some of the best sexual tension around drives this book, but there is also plenty of plot and great characters to keep readers engaged. Juli is an easy character to like, her idiosyncrasies making her relatable and her seemingly dry sense of humor sparks some of the most hilarious moments of the book. Coupled with a sexy guy who has his own emotional depth, Making Waves definitely will be a hit with romance readers all over.

The Extended Version:
Juli has a very interesting view on the world, the reasons for which are revealed at the perfect moments throughout the book. Harboring secrets of her own, yet still very open about many things, Juli makes for a great heroine and someone readers will root for. Ignited in all the best ways by Alex, and completely able to taunt him and play his games, Juli is unique enough to be memorable while still having enough qualities that female readers can picture themselves in the book.

Alex is charming yet seemingly moody, but his own reasons are laid on the table pretty early. A temporary pirate, and tempted by Juli almost to his detriment, Alex is a fantastically well done character with plenty about him to swoon over. Perceptive and intelligent, Alex is far more than just a love interest, and his own role in the book has a great impact and his characterization has a smooth progression.

The remaining cast consists mostly of Alex's three friends on the mission with him, and the way each reacts not only to Juli's unexpected presence but her personality and everything else goes far to build their own personalities.
