Practical Approach to a Healthy Lifestyle,
By Iowa Dietitian "TJ" (IOWA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally (Paperback)
Making Weight Control Second Nature/Living Thin Naturally has motivated me to REALLY pay attention to what I eat and to limit the foods that have been an "addition" to my lifestyle. I have lost 10# so far and have 10 more to go. As a dietitian, I know what to do to avoid weight gain and lose weight, but because I am not THAT heavy (BMI 25), I have not always practiced what I preach. Oh sure, I eat healthy and most often prepare healthy meals, but it's the added foods ie cookies, brownies, chocolate, and eating out that kept my weight on and increasing year after year. Susan Burke-March's book provides practical, no nonsense approaches to losing and maintaining a healthy weight that can last a lifetime. I appeciate the inspirational quotes with each chapter. There are also some clever thoughts throughout the book. The layout is easy to read and can be used as a future reference if someone finds themself needing a 'refresher' in certain areas. I will recommend Making Weight Control Second Nature/Living Thin Naturally to clients, friends and family. This book will help many to identify bad habits and take control of their eating to make healthier changes. It is something I knew I needed to do, but sometimes, even for dietitians, we need motivation and inspiration.

This review is from: Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally (Paperback)
Ready to get help to shed a few pounds...and most importantly keep them off permanently? Choose Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally a sensible and valuable new book about taking weight off and keeping it off...forever. It's not filled, as many "diet" books are, with quick fixes and magic potions.
This book written by Susan Burke March, who's now kept off 40 pounds for over 25 years after yo-yoing up and down the scale for many years. To add to her credentials she's also a nationally respected dietitian and diabetes educator. In Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally, Susan shares her personal weight transformation process and her expertise as a dietitian. Susan has also sought the personal weight management trials, tribulations and tips from her health professional colleagues. Is there a lot of brand new content about the how to's of losing weight and keeping it off? Naturally not! But what Susan focuses on - and we don't hear enough about in best-selling diet books - is the downright hard work of keeping those lost pounds at bay. She reinforces YES, it takes hard work every day and lots of saying NO!

Well, I just ate a healthy lunch and feel great thanks Susan and her book! The interesting thing is that I have invested literally thousands of dollars into many diet programs, foods, formulas, medications, procedures, etc. If you still struggle after all this as I, do yourself a favor and buy this book now. The first 23 pages alone are worth the cost of the entire book. Susan "sets the table" beautifully (no pun intended) and all that's required of the reader is to open their mind and learn from Susan's experiences. This book will help in all fronts of your life. It's that simple...

Straight-forward, no nonsense advice,
This review is from: Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally (Paperback)
Author Susan Burke draws from a wealth of personal and professional experience to present a straight-forward guide that lives up to the promises of its title. Filled with practical advice, this book covers all the bases and is filled with interesting anecdotes that make the material come alive. Books like this are far more likely to lead to permanent weight loss than fad diet books that offer gimmicks.

I just finished reading the book "Making Weight Control Second Nature--Living Thin Naturally." Wow. I plan to recommend it to all my friends and family members and patients who want to lose weight. I really, really like how the author talks about her own struggle to lose weight and the mind games that went with it. It also has little sidebars from other health professionals about what they do to maintain a healthy weight. And another great part is the practical advice related to eating out. It's an easy read, and I wanted to let you all know about it if you didn't already!

Second Nature weight control is key,

This review is from: Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally (Paperback)
Susan's personal odyssey is as fascinating as this weight control book that is chock full of information for people who are serious about taking control of their health. She has calorie information, tips on what's healthy to eat from different cuisines, valuable advice on how to stay fit and basically incorporate a healthy lifestyle - for life. Her tips are practical and come from her own experiences and those she recommended as a professional nutritionist counseling patients. It's inspirational and motivating. I would highly recommend it. It's the kind of book that should be kept on the shelf where you put your cookbooks for quick reference when you shop, cook and eat.

This review is from: Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally (Paperback)
I love the author's no-nonsense, been-there-myself approach to weight loss and good health. No holier-than-thou philosophy here. Burke March, a veteran dietician, engages you and leads you on a journey where you put yourself in charge of how you want to live - and not just how thin you want to live. I can't imagine who wouldn't benefit from reading this book - man, woman....or child. Indeed it's clear in reading the book how important a role childhood plays in where we end up as adults health-wise. The good news is that even if we have life-long bad habits to break, March offers convincing proof, through research, professional experience and personal testimonials, that there is always time and ample reason to make weight control second nature. Go for it - and take this book along with you!

I am no longer giving my teenager's homemade brownies control over me. They are not my weakness they are just food. I am 52 years old and have read everything and tried everything to lose weight and finally there is a book that works for me. Susan's personal journey combined with her expertise in nutrition and her uncomplicated back-to-basics approach helped me get back in control. In one week I feel stronger and I know how to take one day at a time. This book is on my bedside table, and the other copy is in my briefcase. I was in denial that large portions were sabotaging my body and Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally put it in perspective and I lost 3 pounds this week. Not magic, just being active, selecting the foods that make sense and portion control and I will make my weight control second nature because I can.

It covers everything I can think of that would help someone lose weight and is very interesting to read. I really like that Ms. Burke March shared so much of her personal challenge and her journey to being healthy. I think many readers will be able to relate. I will be recommending it to others and have it on my desk for a reference.
