I bought this book as a gift for my brother-in-law's birthday and he loves it! He already has a collection of how-to wine making books, but said that this one includes some recipes for things he hasn't tried before (such as plum wine). If you are looking for a gift idea, then I can recommend this book to you.

This book is full of recipes, which is good. But lacks any explanation of how to use a hydrometer, that you should add sugar to your grapes to get the correct reading; and even what is the correct reading for what you are looking for. I am a complete beginner. I know nothing. I need a book that will take me step by step in the wine process. This book expects you to already know to much. If you want a recipe book, this is good. If you want to learn to make wine, get a different book.

I have been buying several wine making books ( over the years !)to understand what are the different ways that wine is made.While the basic principle is the same, the different methods can be simple or complicated. I bought this book and discovered that it was the best 'simple' book I have. If there was only one book on wine making I'd buy, this would have been the one !My friend saw it and loved it and so I gifted it to her and bought another one myself. Especially great for a first time wine maker. ( I've been making wine off and on for over 20 years!) Doesn't get too complicated. Great book.

This book is copied almost word for word from a 1961 book called "Successful Winemaking at Home" by H.E. Bravery, which original text can be purchased here on Amazon.

The idiot whose name appears on this book, "Brian Cook" has even gone so far as to substitute his name in Mr. Bravery's eponymously appellated recipes. What kind of worthless human being would stoop to that level? He's trying to hide his theft and cover his tracks but the rest of the book is copied word for word. He even passes off the anecdotes and history as if they were his own. I think that blatantly stealing another author's work for personal gain makes Brian Cook a scumbag and an idiot. It is apparent that there was almost no effort put forth to improve or personalize the writing, so it comes off as a garbled mishmash of English sensibility and the moron plagiarist's voice where they've tried to modernize or Americanize some of the text. Not only did he fail to improve the work, it actually makes it harder to read. Really classy, you creep.

In regards the contents of the book itself, it was likely state of the art for home winemaking back in the time it was written. Many of the recipes are unique to this book, at least I have been unable to find their equivalents in my collection of books on making wine.

In reading this edition it is very evident that the "author" of this version didn't actually even bother to make or test any of the recipes contained; as other reviewers have noted, many of the practices put forth as ideal or routine in this book will result in hooch at best.

The author is from the UK, so US wine makers will need to make cultural adjustments to use this book. There is not enough information for the beginner, and the texts needs to be updated for today's techniques and materials. There are lots of recipes that seem great, if you already have wine making experience.

I've made wine for over 30 years and wouldn't recommend his instructions to anyone. He adds grains to fruit wine recipes and calls it whiskey? He uses brewers yeast in some recipes and recommends bottling after 14 days which is okay if you want prison hooch.

What I've had the chance to peruse is very matter-of-fact, yet presently in a conversational tone. I prefer that style over complicated scientific explanations when I'm just wanting to know how to accomplish the "mechanics" of a mixture. Just as it's fun to find out how food is made and some of the chemical combinations involved in cooking, I don't need that to be able to follow a recipe. The same applies here. The author gives very easy recipes, but has prefaced them with the important details of mixing, aging, bottling, storing, etc. Don't skip over those details - they are important. My 4 star rating is because of my pet peeve - no visuals. When making something for the first time, it helps to see what it will (may?) end up looking like. Also, as far as equipment, for the newbie, a picture or two would help, because I still can't figure out what a screw stopper is, even though the author did say that a screw cap is not the same.

On the plus side, this book delivered a recipe which, if faithfully followed, yielded up a good plum and an even better elderberry wine. Also there are a number of authorial comments which, though irrelevant to the subject of the book, relieve from the mechanical act of making wine as the author relates this. Even so, praise to the author who, in a confident tone, tries to enthuse the beginner who may be wary of embarking on his/her own wine making.

However, I was confused by the absence of any effective glossary or any planned sequence of presenting and classifying the different recipes.
