Book Description

June 1998
Containing 30 projects, this book shows how to transform a run-of-the-mill handle, hinge and knob into something more interesting. A turned mushroom knob looks attractive on a cabinet door, while an elaborate whittled knob can be a work of art in itself.

Amazon.com Review

Sometimes an afterthought and a detail overlooked by many, knobs, handles, and hinges, when made of fine woods and well crafted, can transform an otherwise run-of-the-mill piece of furniture into a real work of art and a keepsake. Laminated, grooved, pierced, turned, beaded, carved, inset, and sliding are some of the many styles and designs outlined for hinges, knobs, and handles made of wood, with full instructions, diagrams, and illustrations of 23 unique projects. For the beginning woodworker or the professional, Alan and Gill Bridgewater have put together a truly one-of-a-kind book. --Mark A. Hetts

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book!, August 5, 2001
This review is from: Making Wood Handles, Hinges & Knobs: The Perfect Touch for Cabinetmaking (Paperback)
I loved this book! It sets forth a dozen or so projects, each using different methods and tools. The book takes the reader through the conceptualization and design stage of each project, and details how each project is drawn out on 1/4 inch graph paper. Then the making of the handle or knob is described and pictured in great detail. I learned about Swedish Sloyd knives, scroll saws, and how to use a lathe, including what type of holder to use with your lathe with these small and intricate pieces. I liked the authors' approach to each project. The pictures of the final results are breathtaking. This is a book for the woodworker with some experience who can appreciate uniqueness of hand articulated handles and knobs.

2.0 out of 5 stars The final touch, December 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Making Wood Handles, Hinges & Knobs: The Perfect Touch for Cabinetmaking (Paperback)
For those starting out to do woodworking, this book provide some information - provided you have a lathe. However, if you are looking for examples of creative and innovative handles, hinges or knobs in the style of artisan cabinetmakers, to complete that cabinet you just completed, this is not the book for you. The authors fall short in compiling a book dedicated to one of the last item to be installed, but first to be seen in a completed cabinet. There is a world of work available that could have made this a great find.
