Making Words Second Grade: 100 Hands-On Lessons for Phonemic Awareness, Phonics and Spelling

I have bought grade 1,2, and 3 to help facilitate the differentiating of instruction. The children love when we make words. Everyone is able to work at an appropriate level.

This is an great supplemental resource for teachers of second grade. I have used parts of it before, but now I have Pat Cunningham's work in one easy place for quick reference.

Making Sounds is one of the resource books at our tutoring center. I like that it uses a phonemic awareness/phonics approach, manipulation, discovery, and transfer of concepts to new applications.

I imagine using the lessons in a classroom would take some preparation and time to set up the program and make materials. In the back of the book are pages of letters that can be copied. For durability it's best to use heavy card stock for the copies. Lamininating the letters is another optional step.

We've had some success using this program, the manipulatives being a nice change of pace for our young ones. The strengthening of spelling skills is an added bonus of using "Making Words."

As a primary grade teacher I must say I really enjoyed this product for my own children.
